I still use CDex, even though it was created back in the Windows XP days. You must change the server, though, because it has changed, and you won't get the music database the way it is set now. Write me off-list if you'd like the details for the new server.

Bill:
Even though I haven’t ripped CD’s for a while with CD.EXE, I always found the program to be quite accessible with Jaws.
Can you give me instructions for finding the new CD.EXE server?
I’ll save them for future reference.

Hi, Tom.
To Make CDex Work Again With The New Server,
1. Try to find CDex versions 151.exe, or 170b2_enu.exe. These are the versions that seem to work best.
2. Install, and open CDex.
3. Press ALT plus O for Options, then press ENTER on Settings.
4. Use CONTROL plus TAB to navigate to Remote Server Settings.
5. TAB to Add Site, and press ENTER.
6. TAB back to the address field, and put the following,
gnudb.gnudb.org
7. In the path, put,
/~cddb/cddb.cgi
8. Where the email address goes, put in a valid email address.
9. TAB to Submit, and press ENTER.
10. You will hear an error message telling you that it can't send email via http. Just ignore it.
11. TAB to OK, and press ENTER.
12. Put in a commercial CD that would be in the database, then start CDex. See if the tracks are titled. If they are, it's working. If it says unknown, it's still not working. Something wasn't done right.

Thanks for these very thorough instructions, Bill.
It will be a while, since I have so many irons in the fire right now, but I’m going to save these instructions and will try them when I get the chance.
I suppose I could use Windows Media Player as others have suggested, but I always found cd.exe to be very easy to use, so I’d like to stick with it as long as I can.
Thanks again.

The only thing I don't like about Windows Media Player is that, you can only rip a CD once. If you ever need to rip it again, you must first turn off Windows Media Player, reset it, and install it again, before it will let you rip a CD a second time.

Haha, what! That’s so bizarre.
Software needs to just do what you tell it to and not try to direct things. It’s one of the problems I’ve noticed with mobile devices. But tahst’a rant for another day.

I suppose if you knew where WMP was keeping a record of which CDs were ripped,a nd deleted that record, you would probably be able to do it again.
You just have to find where that info is stored.
Certainly a reinstallation is a step too far that I wouldn’t be willing to go through – I would consider the need to do that to accomplish something a result of an intolerable bug.

Problem is, even if you knew where WMP kept the record of which CD's had been previously ripped, and you deleted that record, you wouldn't know what other settings or data was kept in that same record, and would be deleted, along with the record of previously ripped CD's.

Hi, Marty. Here's a couple of scenarios in which you might want to rip a CD more than once.
1. Suppose you ripped a CD for sharing on a media list, but didn't save the files after you were done sending them to the list. Then you needed to share them again in six months or so. You couldn't rip the CD again to get the files a second time.
2. Suppose you had ripped a CD, and ripped them in mp3 format. Then, later you needed them in wav or flac format. You couldn't rip the files again, to get them in an alternate format.

Maybe. Maybe not. You’d have to have a bit more information than just the name of a file. It shouldn’t’ be that hard to find out what is stored int aht file. Unless Microsoft wants to keep it hidden from the user for some reason?

I suppose if you knew where WMP was keeping a record of which CDs were ripped,a nd deleted that record, you would probably be able to do it again.
You just have to find where that info is stored.
Certainly a reinstallation is a step too far that I wouldn’t be willing to go through – I would consider the need to do that to accomplish something a result of an intolerable bug.

That is interesting. I have never tried to rip a CD a second time, so I hadn't run into that situation.

Windows Media Player does a fantastic job at this. Over 300 CDs ripped and still going.

Bill, I get it, I just said that that situation hadn't happened
yet to me, so I didn't know that WMP acted like that. Although I
do rip my CDs to MP3 at 320 BPS, I had considered re-ripping them
as FLAK and if I did, I would have had this problem, so I guess
that I should Thank You for saving me the headache.
