Enhancements in JAWS 2022.2204.20 (April 2022)
 
The following is a list of improvements made between the February 2022 release and the April 2022 update.

• Added a new keystroke, INSERT+SHIFT+Z, to Temporarily suspend Navigation Quick Keys. This is useful if you need to use conflicting keystrokes provided
by a website, but you do not want to completely turn off the Virtual Cursor. Navigation Quick Keys resume when you move focus away from the current browser
window or navigate to a new page. While this new keystroke is the primary way to access this feature and is referenced in Command Search, the old command,
CTRL+INSERT+N, still works for those users who may still press it out of habit.
• When Speech On Demand is active (INSERT+SPACEBAR, S) and you press INSERT+SPACEBAR, V, C to activate the Sound Cards layer, you will now hear speech
as you use UP or DOWN ARROW to select a different sound device.
• Addressed an issue reported by some users where speech would unexpectedly be lost after starting JAWS.
• Addressed a reported issue where capitalized words were not being read correctly when JAWS was configured to indicate capitalization when reading by
word. This only occurred when using Eloquence.
• Improved JAWS support for tables on web pages that scroll to visually show additional rows as you navigate with the ARROW keys.
• Addressed a reported issue where pressing CTRL+INSERT+R to list all regions on web pages was not working in Forms Mode.
• When switching between open document tabs in Google docs, resolved a reported issue where the name of the current tab was not announced if multiple tabs
had the same name.
• In Google Docs, removed the JAWS commands for moving to the start or end of a table row (ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+LEFT or RIGHT ARROW) so Google can make use of
these keystrokes in an upcoming release.
• Added a new Quick Settings option to help improve JAWS performance when navigating large spreadsheets in Excel for Office 365. If JAWS appears to be
sluggish as you navigate a particular spreadsheet, open Quick Settings (INSERT+V) and turn off Allow performance impacting features. This turns off features
known to impact performance including named title regions, multiple region detection on worksheets, and auto detection of row or column totals on spreadsheets
where no formulas exist for totals calculation. These features tend to result in a slower response time with very large spreadsheets.
• In Office 365, JAWS now correctly indicates when a cell in an Excel workbook contains a note or comment. You can then press ALT+SHIFT+APOSTROPHE to read
the note or comment for the current cell. Note that if a comment contains a thread of replies, this keystroke only reads the initial comment in the thread.
To review the entire comment thread for a cell, or see all cells with comments, use F6 or SHIFT+F6 to cycle to the Comments pane. If this pane is not currently
visible, press ALT+R to access the Review tab and select Show Comments. To list all cells with notes, press CTRL+SHIFT+APOSTROPHE.
• When opening the Outlook Scheduling Assistant, the JAWS Virtual Viewer no longer appears as it interfered with a sighted ZoomText or Fusion User's view
of the window. JAWS users can still navigate the contents of the Scheduling Assistant using the ARROW keys.
• Resolved an issue where group headers in menus were not being announced in Microsoft Office apps.
• Updated the help text for the Announce alerts option in the JAWS Quick Settings for Zoom to mention the ALT+WINDOWS Key+S keystroke for temporarily toggling
alerts.
• The Convert Currency lookup source is once again available for Research It.
• When focused on ARIA content and ALT+INSERT+M is pressed to move to a target element, JAWS now reads the current line that gains focus.
• The Liblouis braille translator used by JAWS and Fusion has been updated to version 3.21.0.
• Resolved an issue with the Italian version of JAWS where various emoji symbols were not being announced as expected.

I think you should know from the standpoint of a Jaws user,  that if it weren’t for  you informing us about updates to  Jaws,  many of us wouldn’t know about them. This is especially true, as many of us have the checkbox too automatically check for updates. Thanks in advance,  Al.

Why would anyone intentionally uncheck the box to automatically check for
updates? I can see this happening accidentally, but otherwise, it makes
little sense in my mind.
It's an alert and does not install anything unless you choose to do so.
And, even if you initially accepted the update, there are additional
confirmations required before actually installation.

I'd be curious to know why would some folks not wanted to be told of
available updates?

Why not?

 

If you want to know about updates, you can just go into Help and What’s new. With this, and the auto updates, I don’t think it’s a problem knowing what’s new.

For some reason, I've never gotten notification of Jaws updates on either of
my Windows 10 computers, and I never unchecked the box to automatically
check for updates.

This is why, in my view, Mike B's e-mails notifying us of updates, and
including the "what's new" info is so important. They are very much
appreciated here.

If someone can tell me where to go to check the update notification box, I'd
be happy to give it a try.

If it is checked it sometimes helps to uncheck it, close the program and restart it, then go back in and check it.

 

Computers and programs are as fickled as us. LOL

Even though I have that
Checkbox checked, for some reason and I don't know why, I never receive
that message that there is a jaws update too install. This is why I was
thanking mike for letting me and others, that was an update for Jaws.

It's an alert and does not install anything unless you choose to do so.
And, even if you initially accepted the update, there are additional
confirmations required before actually installation.

I'd be curious to know why would some folks not wanted to be told of
available updates?

Since you asked, I have the feature turned on with my home computer and turned off at work. For my work computer, I don't do every update, given that they updates don't always improve things I use and it takes my going to the IT team to have the JAWS installation done. At home, it may be a while before I restart JAWS, so I'll get the notifications, but itt's often well after the release. Either way, I like Mike's summary so I can consider whether there is a benefit and easily grab any new keystrokes for my JAWS cheatsheet.

Typically, when I have done Jaws updates, I’ve used the link in your e-mails to grab and save the executable file.  Then, I opened the executable file to actually do the update.

 

I’ve always heard that this is the best way to proceed.

 

Now, with the automatic notification of updates, will I be given the chance to decline, at which point, I could either grab the executable file from your e-mail, or from the Freedom Scientific web site?

you could even choose "check for updates" from the help menu after declining the update, at which point you will be given the option to download and install the update from your running copy of JAWS.

First, check the update from the resulting list that pops up in the update screen by pressing the spacebar, then press "Install".

You will be asked to accept the license agreement, and then you can press "Install" to actually perform the update.

After restarting your PC, the JAWS update will have been installed, unless there's an error. Should that be the case, the installer will alert you to that fact.


Usually, downloading the installer locally is good when a software version is not as fast or, for whatever reasons, causes your Windows to behave oddly, which happens very rarely these days.


Note that you can only perform updates within a major software release.

You cannot update from JAWS 2021 to JAWS 2022. That is an upgrade and has to be done using the respective installers from the FS website or a Freedom Scientific DVD.

Hi, Mike. In the past, some updates done by the automatic JAWS updater have
failed to install correctly, and worse, once a JAWS update fails to update
and install correctly, JAWS needed to be uninstalled and reinstalled from
the JAWS installer. So, Freedom Scientific began to recommend that the
installer be used to update when possible, and that the updater be used when
it was not possible to install directly from the installer.

Yes you get Yes and No optionbuttons to spacebar when you get a Jaws update notification.  Just press spacebar or enter on the No button and then use my post of the update or download the Jaws executable from the FS downloads webpage.

I get what you are saying here about the auto update function, but I know I've heard that doing the updates via a directly-downloaded executable file is really the safest and best way to go.

I'm sure there will be varying opinions here, but this is what I've always understood.
