Moderated voice changing

Rick Mladek

Hi all,

I jump back between JFW 2019 and 2022 due to whatever problems one resolves over the other.

Within either version, when I hit the windows key +m key, to go to the desktop, I then hit the alt key down to file manager, for example. The voice then changes to elequence from my default use of an external voice syn. Any ideas to what setting I need to correct so the same voice or scheme is used no matter where I am within the operating system, Windows 10, FYI. I look forward to all help.

Rick

Hi Rick,

open File Manager and press Control+Shift+S. The SoundScheme dialog will be opened. Press tab key to set focus for the second combo box. The second combo box is the one which changes your voice for File Manager. Press down arrow and up arrow to select your voice and leave the dialog by pressing enter key or activating the OK button.

The next time you activate File Explorer your selected voice (same as in all other apps) should be spoken.

Good luck
Udo

Hi,

File manager? Do you mean file explorer? If so, I did open file manager and
hit the shift +control +s keys and nothing happened. Am I not understanding
your directions correctly? If not, please let me know where I am going
wrong.

Thank you,

Rick

Hi Rick,

sorry, I don't have an English version of JAWS and Windows so I couldn't say the right name in English. In your first mail you spoke of File Manager. So let's first clear up things: If you speak of file manger do you mean the app with the tree view structure on the left in which you can select the folders of your drive and in which are lists of files on the right? If not please give me more information which app file manger is.

What's the difference between file manager and file explorer?

Sorry for my questions but I think I need to know to help.

Greetings
Udo

Well, your comments of columns left and right mean nothing to a blind user
of which JAWS is the screen reader.

File Explorer, is all the drives and folders within a computer. Downloads
and Documents to give a couple as an example.

Now, my synthesizer is external, triple talk USB. When I now hit the windows
and m key to go to the desktop, I then tab down to file explorer. When I tab
off of the desktop, down to the mentioned file explorer, I lose my default
profile, the external synthesizer and I get elequence. This is very odd and
is with both jaws version 2019 and version 2022. My settings with the voice
profile have both/all combination boxes set with the triple talk usb choice
yet when I maneuver as exampled, I lose the triple talk and receive
elequence for some unknown reason.

Thanks for your help,

Rick

Hi Rick,

I will write first your statement and after each statement I will write my answer.

You wrote:

Well, your comments of columns left and right mean nothing to a blind user
of which JAWS is the screen reader.
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you. Even as a blind person you can get the necessary informations from JAWS to find out if you are on the right side of the screen or if you are on the left side of the screen. If you press Alt+Delete JAWS will announce the name of the active cursor first and then the pixel coordinates x and y. (left and top). If you are on a control and press the key and then go to the next control and press this key you can find out if you are on the right or on the left.

So if you find out the tree view is on the left side and the list view on the right side you automatically will know that the tab key in the tree view probably will bring you faster to the list view on the right side and if you are in the list view on the right that Shift+Tab will bring you to the tree view more quickly than tab key.

File Explorer, is all the drives
and Documents to give a couple as an example.
So File Explorer is the one with the tree view, right? And File Manager on the other hand probably is the File Explorer without tree view.

Please press JAWS+Control+S in your app and right after this JAWS+T to get the title of the dialog. What does JAWS announce?

You can get the spoken message easy by pressing JAWS+Space then S. This open all spoken messages from JAWS in a dialog and at the end should be the title of the dialog JAWS has spoken by pressing JAWS+T.

Thanks for your help,
You're welcome.

Udo

Hi again,

When in file explorer, I did hit shift, control and S keys at same time. I
then hit jaws curser and t and it said file explorer. Nothing else able to
be done unless I go into a specific folder, downloads for example. When in
file explorer, the external syn works again but as I stated earlier, when I
hit windows and m to go to desktop, once I hit tab key to go down it goes
into elequence. When I hit enter on file explorer, it goes back to the
external syn.

Hello Rick:

Get into the application where the wrong synthesizer becomes active. Press Control, JAWS Key and s. Arrow up and down to pick the synthesizer you want. Tab once and you will be in another field. This has another list of synthesizers, but the topmost entry is "use default". Select that, then hit OK.

Cordially,

Hi,

This is happening when not in any specific application. Only when I go to desktop then tab down to other choices, as file explorer. I stated file manager incorrectly previusly. Nevertheless, this is happening with two different versions of Jaws, 2019 and 2022. Once within any specific app, it reverts back to the default synthesizer. When I tab down from the desktop, it goes to elequence. I know this was not doing this previously. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Rick

Hi, Rick. As Curtis has said, CONTROL plus JAWS key plus S will get you into the selection box for JAWS voice profiles. When you are on the desktop, JAWS is using the Windows OS configuration. so CONTROL plus JAWS key plus S will still give you a selection dialog for voice profiles which should govern which voice is used for the desktop. Try selecting your default external synth while you are on the desktop, and see if this will resolve the problem of the voice changing.

Hi rick,

you somehow must have changed the synthesiser for the desktop.

As far as I remember, the desktop has a different file associated with it as far as JAWS configuration is concerned.

To remedy this, with Eloquence speaking, pres CONTROL+JAWSKey+s to bring up the voice profile dialogue.

Next, tab to where it says "for Windows oS". This should read "Eloquence".

Change the synthesizer to standard, which should be your Triple Talk synthesizer.

Press enter, and all should be OK now.

Hi,

I'm sorry for bein such a troubled one here. When I click to the desktop, my default synthesizer, Triple-Talk, keeps up and running. How can I keep it to triple talk when I am tabbing down from the desktop?

Hi Rick,

the moment the synthesizer voice changes to eloquence you should press Ctrl+Shift+S to open the dialog for changing your speech scheme. There you can change your synthesizer voice. If nothing happens by pressing the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S then press first JAWS+3 to pass the following shortcut to the underlying app and then Ctrl+Shift+S.

Good luck

when I hit the tab key to go down/over to the start button or to file
explorer, this is when elequence jumps in and if I click on anything, file
explorer for example, it then goes back to Triple-Talk. How can I keep it to
triple talk when I am tabbing down from the desktop?

Thanks for your help and understanding,

Rick

Hi rick,

you somehow must have changed the synthesiser for the desktop.

As far as I remember, the desktop has a different file associated with
it
as far as JAWS configuration is concerned.

To remedy this, with Eloquence speaking, pres CONTROL+JAWSKey+s to
bring up the voice profile dialogue.

Next, tab to where it says "for Windows oS". This should read "Eloquence".

Change the synthesizer to standard, which should be your Triple Talk
synthesizer.

Press enter, and all should be OK now.

Nermin

Hi, Rick. The correct keystroke to select a scheme is ALT plus JAWS key plus
S. The keystroke to select a new profile is CONTROL plus JAWS key plus S.
They should not both be set to select a sound scheme.

Sorry, did not work. I was able to hit control +jaws +s and it asked for a
scheme to pick, it is set already on classic. Not what I was looking for
nevertheless.

Hi Rick,

the moment the synthesizer voice changes to eloquence you should press
Ctrl+Shift+S to open the dialog for changing your speech scheme. There you
can change your synthesizer voice. If nothing happens by pressing the
shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S then press first JAWS+3 to pass the following shortcut
to the underlying app and then Ctrl+Shift+S.

Good luck
Udo

None of the key strokes are working. Odd is it is, it is what it is.

Hi, Rick. You should be speaking with Freedom Scientific if the keystroke,
JAWS key plus CONTROL plus S does not give you the opportunity to select a
profile.
