Moderated More on my ongoing problem with jaws 2022
Kimber Gardner
Hi all,
I wrote in a couple of weeks ago regarding a problem I've had with jaws 2022 in which all the options in the jaws window are disappearing when I restart my laptop. I now have a few more observations and perhaps have detected a pattern. Just to recap briefly. When I install jaws 2022 the install seems to be successful. But when I restart my laptop (Lenovo model E580 running windows 10 latest build), all the options in my jaws window disappear. The only options remaining are exit and about jaws. Now here's the interesting part. If I do not start jaws automatically but rather run jaws after the laptop has fully booted up, the options are there. If I have jaws start automatically the options are gone. Another strange issue is that jaws will start automatically even if I uncheck the box that says start jaws automatically. The only way I have found to start jaws and have the options present is to press the windows key +R and type jaws2022. This leads me to believe that there is something in the startup process that is dinging jaws. I've spoken to FS tech support repeatedly about this problem with no joy. Here's my next question. How can I see what's going on during startup to try and determine where the problem is occurring? Is this even the best next step? Thanks for reading. All suggestions will be gratefully considered. Could it be possible that you have an older version starting automatically? You say you see the about option, check and see what version is there.

Hi, Kimber,
are you using "Fast start-up" or does your system actually shut down properly? I'm asking this since a lot of errors and weird behaviour can happen if you're using fast start-up. To get rid of this, in case that's what's really going on, do the following:
1 Open the Control Panel with Windows+i and go to
"Power Options".
5. To Turn Off Fast Startup Under Shutdown settings, uncheck the "Turn on fast startup box", then select the "Save changes button" 6 You can now close the System Settings window if you like. If the Turn on fast startup setting is not listed, then you will need to close the System Settings window, enable hibernate, then start over at step 1 again.
Good luck, Nermin |

Try invoking shell:startup with the run command to see if there is a JAWS shortcut in that folder. Another thing to check is your Task manager. see if JAWS is somewhere shown in the Startup tab. Best, Curtis Chong On Mar 11, 2022, at 8:37 AM, Kimber Gardner <kimbersinbox1963@...> wrote:

Hello Kim:
I can recommend a work around which does not address the issue of JAWS being corrupted at startup but which will enable JAWS to start up automatically a bit later than it is starting right now on your system. I will point out that on my system, where I need to enter a PIN, I am now using Narrator because it tends to start more expeditiously than JAWS.☺ If you need the procedure for setting this up, let us know.
1. In the Task Manager’s Startup area, find where the JAWS item is, right click (applications key) on it, and activate disable. 2. Press Windows R, type shell:startup, and press Enter. This folder should be empty. Copy the JAWS shortcut on your Desktop into this folder. 3. Ensure that JAWS is not set to start automatically either at login or after—unless you need to have JAWS up to enter a password or PIN.
Years ago, I ran into a similar problem with JAWS startup, but for the life of me, I cannot remember how, at that time, I was able to resolve that problem.
Warmly,
Curtis Chong

Here's the status of the boxes that tell jaws what to do on startup: Start jaws at logon screen is unchecked. Start jaws for all users is unchecked. The combo box that tells jaws what to do for this user is confusing me. When it is set to never, jaws doesn't start automatically. Which is what I would expect. However, when set to always, jaws starts automatically regardless of whether or not those first two boxes are checked or unchecked. Is that what you would expect to see? Because to me, the status of that combo box seems to cancel out whatever has been indicated in those first two boxes. I'm sorry if this is confusing. But I feel like I'm getting closer to figuring out what's happening. As a side note, If I have jaws starting automatically and the options have disappeared, if I unload jaws then reload by typing jaws2022 at the run command, everything is fine and all menus and options are present. So there is something happening in the startup process that is corrupting jaws. Very weird. K On 3/11/22, Curtis Chong <chong.curtis@...> wrote:

Your interpretation is spot on. The This User combo box will override the checkbox which determines if JAWS should start after login. If you want to start JAWS some other way, you would set that combo box to never. Then, put the shortcut for JAWS in the shell:startup folder. Warmly, Curtis Chong -----Original Message-----

Hi, Kimber. May I ask you a question? Are you using the license which allows you to use JAWS from an SMA (Software Maintenance Agreement, or are you using the $96 per year, yearly subscription to JAWS? If you are using the $96 per year subscription, this has been a problem for over a year, and several people have mentioned that JAWS starts in a strange mode when using the yearly license. People have said that their options are limited, or not there at all at startup when using the $96 per year, yearly license.

People have said that their options are limited, or not there at all at startup when using the $96 per year, yearly license. Hey there, Curtis, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio, feel free to call me BZ, grin! Could you provide the instructions with respect to copying the jaws 2022 shortcut to the shell:startup folder? My wife kathy and I just got new jbl bluetooth headsets and we've had some issues with speech getting cut off and certainly have used the jaws setting that's supposed to prevent this so definitely will also consider Bill White's solution with silencio but also wanted to try your approach to see how well it works. Sure appreciate your postings and assistance to the list, you have a great day! BZ!

Howdy BZ:
Here is the procedure.
Hello
1. Ensure that JAWS does not attempt to start itself automatically under any circumstances except for the possibility of logging in to the computer. A. Go into JAWS, and navigate to Options > Basics... B. Tab to and activate Automatically Start JAWS... C. Start JAWS at the Logon screen can be checked or not depending on whether you have to enter a password when turning on or rebooting your system. I myself prefer to use Narrator when performing a logon since it starts a lot faster than JAWS. D. Ensure that “Start JAWS after logon for all users” is not checked. E. In the Start JAWS After Logon for this user combo box, select the “Never” choice. 2. Now, find the JAWS shortcut on your Desktop and copy it to the Clipboard. 3. Press Windows R to bring up the Run dialog, type “shell:startup” without the quotes, and press Enter. 4. Paste the JAWS shortcut you copied from the Desktop into this folder, then close it with ALT+F4.
Cordially,
Curtis Chong

Hello Bill:
Kim's problem was resolved. We disabled all of the JAWS automatic startups and copied the JAWS shortcut into the shell:startup folder. JAWS starts up a little later, but the problem is no longer there.

Hi Curtis,
Here's the status of the boxes that tell jaws what to do on startup:
Start jaws at logon screen is unchecked.
Very weird.
