Moderated JAWS 2022 changing slides in PowerPoint

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a PowerPoint presentation using JAWS 2022, latest
update. We are using Office 365.

I will be presenting with a co-worker virtually through Microsoft
Teams. My co-worker will be sharing her screen and running the
PowerPoint presentation, and I will be using another copy of the
PowerPoint presentation and following along. I will be speaking on
some of the slides, and she will be speaking on others.

The problem I am running into is that, in slide show view, when I
press the spacebar to switch to the next slide, the slide doesn't
switch on the first press of the spacebar. On some slides it takes 2
or 3 presses, on others 4 or 5. If I try to press the spacebar quickly
to try to swithch slides, sometimes I will press the spacebar too many
times and, as a result, end up skipping over the next slide. It seems
like the focus moves to each line of text on the slide at each press
of the spacebar, instead of switching slides.

My question is, is there a way to have the slide switch on the first
press of the spacebar?

I'm not sure this is a JAWS issue, as my sighted co-worker says that
the same thing happens when she presses the spacebar on her copy of
the slide show, and she's not running JAWS.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am assuming that when you start the slide show (F5) that JAWS shows the page as a virtual window. The space bar should advance to the next page. However, have you tried using the letter n or p (next/previous, respectively) to advance or back up the slide presentation?

This feature in JAWS is incredibly useful in terms of our ability to read PowerPoint presentations.

Yes, I've tried using the letter's N and P to navigate as well as page
Down and Page Up with the same results. I'm not sure why the slide
doesn't change on the first press of any of these keys, and, it makes
it difficult to present in a professional manner. I may call FS Tech
support to see if they have any ideas.

Hello Russell:

Is the presentation confidential or could you possibly send me a copy? I am keen to know if perhaps a bug has been introduced by a JAWS update. I just opened up an existing PowerPoint slide that I had prepared a couple of years ago, and I have noticed about a two to three second delay that occurs when I flip to the next or previous page, depending on how much stuff there is on the page I am navigating to. I usually have to press CTRL+HOME to ensure that my focus is at the top of the virtual page each time I scroll.

Hi Curtis,

I sent a copy of my PowerPoint presentation to Eric at Freedom
Scientific, and he was able to reproduce the issue I am experiencing,
but he wasn't able to provide a fix. I appreciate your offer to have a
look, but I'm sure you will experience the same thing. It may have
something to do with the way the PowerPoint was created. It's an old
presentation that we've adapted over the years.

Hi Russell

I suspect that there may be animations, such as bullet points that are visually emphasised. The space bar will trigger each animation and then move to the next slide. If this is the case, remove them from your slideshow and that should solve the issue.

Is there animation on your slides? That is, many sighted people will create a slide that brings in a new aspect of the slide at the press of the spacebar such as each new bullet point of text. When I encounter this, I turn off animations on the copy I'm reading. Go to the Slide Show ribbon and tab to the Setup Slide show button. That opens a dialog where there is a check box where you can disable the animations. I think the keystrokes are alt s, S, 1.

Hi Russell,

I too have experienced the problem of PowerPoint not advancing to the next page. This is not a JAWS issue as my sighted colleagues have also experienced the same issue on their computers. My solution was to use a remote clicker for PowerPoint. You can easily get this from Amazon. An example is:

Thank you to all who tried to help with this issue, but especially to
Ben and Robin. The problem was exactly as you both had indicated.
Every slide has from 3 to 6 lines of text, all preceded with a bullet
point. I had no idea that these bullet points were animations, but as
soon as I disabled animations in the slide show, everything started
working as I wanted, i.e. when I press the spacebar, I am taken to the
next slide.

Our presentation is tomorrow evening, so I really appreciate you
solving this issue for me!

So glad that worked! I'm not exactly sure how we are supposed to easily know that there are animations. It's one of those things that sighted people like to do to keep the audience focused on one bullet point at a time. I definitely see it in training presentations.

Every slide has from 3 to 6 lines of text, all preceded with a bullet point. I had no idea that these bullet points were animations, but as soon as I disabled animations in the slide show, everything started working as I wanted, i.e. when I press the spacebar, I am taken to the next slide.

Our presentation is tomorrow evening, so I really appreciate you solving this issue for me!

encounter this, I turn off animations on the copy I'm reading. Go to
the Slide Show ribbon and tab to the Setup Slide show button. That
opens a dialog where there is a check box where you can disable the
animations. I think the keystrokes are alt s, S, 1.

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a PowerPoint presentation using JAWS 2022, latest
update. We are using Office 365.

I will be presenting with a co-worker virtually through Microsoft
Teams. My co-worker will be sharing her screen and running the
PowerPoint presentation, and I will be using another copy of the
PowerPoint presentation and following along. I will be speaking on
some of the slides, and she will be speaking on others.

The problem I am running into is that, in slide show view, when I
press the spacebar to switch to the next slide, the slide doesn't
switch on the first press of the spacebar. On some slides it takes 2
or 3 presses, on others 4 or 5. If I try to press the spacebar quickly
to try to swithch slides, sometimes I will press the spacebar too many
times and, as a result, end up skipping over the next slide. It seems
like the focus moves to each line of text on the slide at each press
of the spacebar, instead of switching slides.

My question is, is there a way to have the slide switch on the first
press of the spacebar?

I'm not sure this is a JAWS issue, as my sighted co-worker says that
the same thing happens when she presses the spacebar on her copy of
the slide show, and she's not running JAWS.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
