Moderated Jaws not reading text as I type in edit fields in Edge

tele1974@...

When I’m in an edit field in Edge, Jaws will mot read text with any of the read commands. Any idea how I can correct this?

Have a read through the topic in the NVDA group:  Issue with search engine fields and NVDA

Different screen reader, and most likely the same root cause, which does not lie with the screen reader, but with Chromium-based browsers, at least until the bug gets fixed.

Could there be a setting I need to change in Jaws maybe? Using Jaws 18.

Leo

Hi, I’m using Jaws 2022 latest compilation and Microsoft Edge stable channel latest build, and I’m not having this issue.

I would venture myself to say  that it’s probably your old Jaws version.

And I'd have to concur.  There have just been too many changes in Windows and JAWS both since JAWS 18 to not expect to have issues with that version.

Everything is now, for all practical intents and purposes, in "as a service" mode and that includes screen readers.  Nothing stays stable in the way it used to in the pre-Windows-10 days.

Unfortunately, this is on a work machine. We have a couple of programs that only work with Jaws 18, so upgrading for now is out of the question. It’s very strange, if I tab out of the field and go back it will read what I have typed in, but if I try to use the jaws commands to read word or line or go back or forward, it doesn’t read anything. Nor does anything show up on the braille display. Very strange as I don’t have this problem in explorer.

I have experienced this with NVDA as well, and mentioned that in the topic to which I made reference.  My workaround is doing precisely what you're doing:  tabbing out of the field then SHIFT + TABbing back in if I need to review when this occurs.

I can't speak to anything related to Braille displays, but this is an interesting observation and data point for filing away in my noggin.

I tried duplicating the reported problem in JFW 2020, 2021 and 2022; no
issues with a chrome browser and edit fields.
And, to Brian's point: ditto to his comments.
2022 worked far more smoothly than the older versions of JFW I have on the
system.

Van Lant, Robin

I’m still running JAWS 2021 on my work laptop and I see this occasionally on some sites, but I’d have to pay more attention to the issue.   There does seem to be some issues with web design on some edit boxes.  A couple things that work for me are to use  insert up arrow to validate what is in the edit box or, if that doesnn’t work or if I’m trying to get to a particular place to edit what is there, I find that using Shift Control arrows to highlight the text will read each word as it is highlighted.  So, if I make a typo in a comment box and want to go edit a word, I’ll go to the beginning, then do the shift Control right arrow to read the text, then when I hear the place I need to change, I’ll stop pressing the control and shift and just hit right or left arrow.  It can still be a guessing game, and if it’s a really long sentence I’m editing, I might just copy and paste into notepad to edit.

And let me tell you, blind or sighted, this is an excellent idea for a lot of reasons.

I have learned, the hard way, that you can easily lose everything you've been typing, particularly in webpages, if certain confluences of events occur.  While I wouldn't call these common, they're common enough to give consideration to "in the back of your head" when you find you need to put lengthy text content into an edit box somewhere.

I've even lost messages for groups such as this one that I've been carefully composing over a long period of time when things like my own stupidity in accidentally closing my browser have occurred or other things like a sudden power outage and others.

Composing this sort of stuff in MS-Word or Notepad, then cutting and pasting it in afterward, has saved me a lot of heartache on occasion.  I tend to prefer MS-Word only because of it's auto-backup feature, as that's saved my work (and bacon) on several occasions when the untoward (like a power outage) has occurred.

Often, it really depends on what risks you're willing to shoulder and what pain you're willing to endure if "the unfortunate" occurs.

But when it comes to lengthy text input, I favor doing the composition and editing in a dedicated program and then cutting/copying and pasting it into a web form field afterward.

If you are using JAWS 18, you are not keeping up with the most current browsing technology. I strongly urge you to get JAWS 2022. Modern browsers such as Edge and Chrome will work significantly better if you use JAWS 2022. It’s only $95 per year.

I do use webmail, but that was not one of the contexts I had in mind, as virtually every webmail interface has had a auto-save drafts every X minutes feature for a very long time now.

I participate on this group (and all Groups.io groups) via its web forum interface, and even that has an auto-save drafts feature.

But there are lots of web pages for things like surveys, or applying for a job where there is a "tell me about yourself" sort of edit box, where no auto-save exists.  For situations like that is where I'm thinking that composing your treatise for that particular edit box then copying/cutting and pasting it in once complete and reviewed is the way to go.  It's impossible for me to give an exhaustive list of examples, but I presume that "when you hit one" (the generic you) after a while you recognize when an external compose is a good idea.  One certainly doesn't do that for, say, name and address edit boxes.
