Moderated office 365

Judy

Hi, I need to upgrade from having outlook 2010, more than time to do so. I know it costs to download office 365, and I also know there’s a plan where they charge you yearly for upgrades. I heard there is also a plan where they don’t charge you after the initial download. Does anyone have any info on this. I have never before had to pay for an email client, so doing so irks me, but I really don’t want to pay yearly if I don’t have to. Thanks in advance. Judy & Libby

If you pay $99.99 annually you can purchase Office 365 which includes all updates going forward. You can purchase the latest version of Office but it does not include all of the updates. Also, the Office 365 can be downloaded onto 6 different computers so other family members can also use it. I also found that you can purchase an annual subscription for 1 user for $69.99 per year. I couldn’t find any Office product similar to Office 2010  that includes Outlook so I guess you have to purchase it separately.

In short, if you want Microsoft Office that includes Outlook your best option is Office 365. Otherwise, you would have to purchase Office 2021 and then purchase Outlook. If you are using JAWS you will need a more recent version to run Windows 10 or 11.\s

Hi Judy:

I thought you said you are running Office 2019 now. You can still acquire this as a one-time purchase, and you do not have to subscribe to the Microsoft 365 annual license if you don’t want to.

There is, though, a slight risk. The subscription products are continually updated, and some of those updates to fix accessibility issues. The one-time purchased licenses do not get updated nearly as frequently. You may appreciate this if you do not want unanticipated changes to be introduced into critical products such as Word/Outlook<smile>.

Warmly,

Curtis Chong

The cost would be approximately $250 up front to get the most current version of Office. Contrast this with $69.95 up front and an ongoing annual subscription.

Curtis, thanks so much for the link. Hi Judy:

I thought you said you are running Office 2019 now You can still acquire this as a one-time purchase, and you do not have to subscribe to the Microsoft 365 annual license if you don’t want to

If you pay $99.99 annually you can purchase Office 365 which includes all updates going forward You can purchase the latest version of Office but it does not include all of the updates.

Good morning everyone,

It’s better to have apps on your computer you may think you won’t use than to not have them. You never know when they may be needed. For $70.00 annually you can’t go wrong.

Van Lant, Robin

Judy,

If finances are a concern, you can see if you can find an individual retail license to Office.  I did this a few years ago when I bought my latest computer. At the suggestion of someone on this list, I looked on ebay and found a retail copy of Office 2016.  Office 2019 had come out, but I wanted to use the same office as we were using at work back then.  Anyway, I’m still using that license on my personal laptop.  While I don’t like the idea of paying $70 a year to move to Office 365, I am considering it, but, unlike  you, I do use Word, Excel and Outlook a lot at home.  Having said all this though, when my husband got a new laptop a few months ago, I looked on ebay again for a single license for Office 2019 for him and the prices were much higher than I expected. I’m not sure if that is because it was a version higher than I had purchased or if supply and demand.  I thought I heard somewhere that Microsoft was doing away with individual licenses, so it could be that you just cannot easily buy one anymore.

Robin

Hi, I need to upgrade from having outlook 2010, more than time to do so. I know it costs to download office 365, and I also know there’s a plan where they charge you yearly for upgrades. I heard there is also a plan where they don’t charge you after the initial download. Does anyone have any info on this. I have never before had to pay for an email client, so doing so irks me, but I really don’t want to pay yearly if I don’t have to. Thanks in advance. Judy & Libby

Thanks Robin. Basically I use outlook and word, and yes, you never know when you may need something in the future. I’ll check around and see.  Judy & Libby

Robin

If email is your primary concern there is always Windows Mail (built in to Windows10) or Mozilla Thunderbird. Both require a certain amount of up front learning as do most things new in software.

Curtis, thanks so much for the link. I read through the article and obviously paying $70 for 365 makes sense financially, however it really bugs me to have to pay $70 a year for something that I won’t use at least half of what it includes. Microsoft 2021 gives me what I really need to use but I’m not paying $250 for it. What a dilemma! Do any free email clients still exist?  Judy & Libby

Curtis, no, I currently have outlook 2010, and I know it’s not supported anymore and am frequently having problems. Can you find office 2019 on the Microsoft page? Didn’t think it was available anymore. Thanks. Judy & Libby

Hi Judy:

I thought you said you are running Office 2019 now You can still acquire this as a one-time purchase, and you do not have to subscribe to the Microsoft 365 annual license if you don’t want to

Curtis, I didn’t think that I could still get office 2019. I was told by a friend who should know this stuff that you can’t. If you know I can get, how do I do so. Thanks. Judy & Libby

If you pay $99.99 annually you can purchase Office 365 which includes all updates going forward You can purchase the latest version of Office but it does not include all of the updates.
