My guess is it's a slideshow/photo carousel, but I can't be absolutely certain. If you share one of those links here I can take a look. I have a digital subscription to the New York Times and can have a look at exactly what comes up when I follow the link.

Are you saying the link you provided to the actual opinion article being announced as a Carousel link? Brian: Yes. That link as well as about five other links in the opinion section are announced by jaws as “carousel link”. I don’t think I encounter that anywhere outside of the NYT opinion section.

I suspect you have tripped over a very recent development in web coding, as new objects are constantly coming into existence, and this is how same is exposed to the screen reader. I really can't say that there is anything clear about why that is, or what, precisely that means.
