moderated Has Windows finally developed a screen curtain like Apple has for Voice over

Hi all,
Is there a screen curtain in Windows? If not anyway I can prevent people spoofing in when I type in some personal content? Thanks -- Regards, Turab Chimthanawala (ACS, LLM) +91-8087813609 turabhvc@...

No, and I'm glad of it too.

The trouble with screen curtains is if your device crashes and the screen doesn't come on, you can't get sighted help. You can use the "Screenshade" feature in JAWS to prevent others from looking over your shoulder when you type sensitive details. The Screenshade can be turned on or off with the keystroke, JAWS key + Spacebar, followed by F11. This keystroke is a toggle keystroke. Regards Sameer Latey

There is not one in Win 10, and I haven’t played with Win 11 enough to answer that question. JAWS has a screen curtain that I believe was introduced in 2020. As far as Steve’s comment about the system crashing, the screen curtain would not remain active as it is only on until JAWS is reset (or in the case of MacOS or iOS until the device is reset). Meaning if you are using JAWS and logout or reboot the machine the screen curtain is off until you turn it back on again. If the machine crashes and reboots or is forced to reboot the screen curtain will be off until you reactivate it again.

For the purpose of entering sensitive data, the screen curtain is ideal since you can toggle it on and off very quickly.

Why not just turn off the monitor completely?

I would never leave a laptop lid closed. At my last place of employment (last as in now retired,) a guy did that because he had a large external monitor and a very small office so used it as extra desk space ... that is until it over heated and wouldn't turn on and was making lots of noise because the fan was working massive overtime.

Well I have had laptops shut and running for many years, and they have never over heated from that.

If there is a problem with the system that is making it work hard, way harder than it should, I suppose the lid being closed may contribute, but I'd suspect a bigger contribution would be dust combined with malware. I have an Acer that a friend gave me because he could never get it working without over heating, and I think he frequented porn sights, which will give your computer malware. Every time he reinstalled windows, he did not have that problem, so he got tired of that, and gave it to me. I have never had a problem with it over heating. Glenn

Hi, Steve. All that is necessary is that the screen curtain be turned on, each time the operating system loads. Once done, the curtain could stay up, until unloading of Windows. This would give the user a screen curtain, and also prevent lack of video at load of OS.

Because if you work in an environment with sighted people who may want to look at your monitor turning it off and on many times a day is inconvenient whereas for Jaws users the screen shade key sequence is easy, quick and effective. And there is the fact that continuously turning electronic devices on and off can sometimes do more harm than it does good.

Have you ever heard about blind and sighted people working together? There is a difference between "assistance" and "collaboration". In my case there is also the fact that I may have 3 customers coming into my office inside half an hour and in some cases I may want them to see the screen because maybe I want to show them a product and in some cases I may not want them to see the screen if I have to look up the cost of a product because they are asking me for a deal and I have to check if I can give them one or not. I don't know what you do for work, but it seems you are mostly doing it alone.

Well when I need a coworker to come in and collaborate, I can either lift the lid of the laptop in the docking station, or power on the monitor.

I think that is rare that a monitor of a Blind person needs to be on. I think you want to be contrary here, and perhaps you are in a rare situation. I think that in a call center too, the supervisors would not like anyone's monitor being off, as they walk around to check on what the workers are doing. Glenn

I am not at all trying to be contrary, you were the one who implied that if I needed that much sighted assistance something was wrong where my post simply stated that if you were in an environment where you worked with sighted people turning the monitor off and on many times a day was inconvenient.

I know I am in a unique situation with my retail business, but I know a lot of blind people both here and back in Germany where I grew up who are lawyers, judges, IT professionals or who work for the government and are in settings where they interact with sighted colleagues or clients all the time.

Well given that the unemployment rate of the Blind is over 70%, I think the majority on this list are not in a situation like yours, and don't require much sighted collaboration/assistance, nor is it even often available.
