Moderated sometimes jaws not working with chrome

Usually JAWS works well with chrome. But I notice that sometimes it doesn't work, like suddenly the navigation keys don't work. I try reloading the page and it doesn't work. It's a matter of time before I try something that makes it work, like restarting JAWS. But I don't know what it is going on. Maybe something on the page hasn't fully loaded? Any ideas?

crayton Benner <craybay3198@...>

Perhaps. Maybe it’s something with jaws and chrome? Not to sure on that. I think perhaps that it has something though to do with something taking time to load on a page.

Good morning:

Here is what I notice with JAWS and Chrome.

  1. Oftentimes, Chrome takes a while to bring up a page. Pressing INSERT+T gives you Chrome untitled.
  2. When the page actually does come up, I routinely press Numpad Plus to hear JAWS say Virtual Cursor. This is my confirmation that I can now use some of the JAWS shortcut commands to navigate through the page.
  3. Otherwise, JAWS with Chrome is working fairly well for me.

HTH.

Best regards,

Curtis Chong

Yep. Now that’s a good idea.

Yes, I can duplicate this in both JAWS 2021 and beta 2022, but not reliably enough to be able to report it.

The other one is that it won’t load the virtual buffer, sometimes, unless you tab into the page.

All the best

Sorry, you are correct. I use Chrome so little nowadays and just assumed that Jaws would also announce this in Chrome since it does so in the Chromium version of Edge.

Try reading Alt + tab to task switch back to refocus the page?

Hi,

Sorry to join this thread a bit late.  I too have experienced problems with JAWS interacting with Chrome.  The arrow keys work fine to navigate the page but any of the other keys like the number 2 or letter h does not work.  My only fix is to close and restart JAWS.  Annoying?  Yes.  In the grand scheme of life this is fairly minor.  Although a reliable fix wouldn't hurt!😊

Have a good day,

I wonder if it is JAWS not detecting that Chrome is in focus?

Hi,

It just happened again.  I used JAWS-T and heard the "title is….  I tried to navigate using H for headings and just heard "h"  I tried ALT-tab to switch programs.  Again I could not navigate by headings, which I am confident are present.  I refreshed the page with no change.  After I unloaded and re-loaded JAWS it behaved normally.  I am using the most recent Chrome browser and JAWS 21 on a Win10 laptop.

Lee Anne, thank you for checking and reporting.  Steve, I hope that helps. I'm also unclear what you mean by JAWS not detecting Chrome is in focus. Is that different than JAWS + q?

Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>

Try to press F5 to refresh the page.

You may also want to give Edge a try, it's very much like Chrome, but the Immersive Reader feature alone makes it a better browser for visually impaired users in my opinion.

Subject: Re: sometimes jaws not working with chrome

Lee Anne

Yep that works, but you shouldn’t have to jump through these hoops.

Try reading Alt + tab to task switch back to refocus the page?

Good morning:

Here is what I notice with JAWS and Chrome.

  1. Oftentimes, Chrome takes a while to bring up a page. Pressing INSERT+T gives you Chrome untitled.
  2. When the page actually does come up, I routinely press Numpad Plus to hear JAWS say Virtual Cursor. This is my confirmation that I can now use some of the JAWS shortcut commands to navigate through the page.
  3. Otherwise, JAWS with Chrome is working fairly well for me.

HTH.

Any ideas?

Was wondering if anyone has knowledge if Spark Instant Messenger is compatible with JAWS 2018?

Thanks

Lee Anne,

I don't know what is advised earlier, but when you could not do
anything: try to press the tabkey. Sometimes the focus is not in the
webpage and with tab you will land in the page. Or f6 several times is
also a option.
This will work for me sometimes.
I sometimes press f6, then the num-plus to see if the virtual pc cursor
is active and if not: I press f6 again.

Kind regards, Marten

I wonder if it is JAWS not detecting that Chrome is in focus?

When it next happens, please someone do a JAWS Key and T and tell us what it reports. I’ll do the same if it happens to me.

Hello:

Did you hear that the title was Chrome or something else? If not Chrome, then the focus went somewhere outside of the Chrome universe.

Actually, when Lee Anne did a "Title" command, she said that JAWS only said, "Title is". That shows that nothing was in focus.
