Moderated Outlook closing with particular key command

Van Lant, Robin

Hi,

Running JAWS 2021 with Outlook 365 on Windows 10 here at work.  I’ve noticed a quirk in Outlook in the last while and just got around to doing some more thorough testing today. Wondering if anyone else can replicate this.

I’ll be working in Outlook.  I will want to go to my contacts to check the spelling of a name or such and so I’ll use Control 3 to move to Contacts.  Immediately, Outlook will close and, if I was typing a message,  I will lose any email message I am in the process of typing. From what I can tell, this only happens if I’m in the inbox and then go to contacts.  If I go to calendar, taks list or back t inbox using the similar keysotrikes, no problem. I doesn’t happen every time, but at least 50% of the time and likely more. Same occurs if I revert back to JAWS 2020, so it’s not a recent JAWS change, but could be an Office update.  I could not replicate the problem when not running a speech program. When I tested with Narrator, it occurred once, but then I tried several more times and couldn’t get it to do it again.   At home I am running JAWS 2021 and the retail version of Outlook 2016 and cannot replicate the issue.

Can some of you on office 365 test this?  Just use Control, 1, Control 2 and Control 3 to move between sections.  As I said, I think I only get the issue if I’m going from the Mail to Contacts.

Robin:

I am finding that CTRL+3 is not a good keystroke to use in JAWS 2021 while in Outlook and trying to get to the Contacts folder. I ultimately resorted to using CTRL+Y (the go to function) to get to Contacts.

This problem seems to be fixed with JAWS 2022. Right now, I am running the first public beta.

With kind regards,

Curtis Chong

Hi

Whilst not having this problem with Outlook, I have noticed some intermittent behaviour when in Microsoft Word  at work (same versions of Windows, JAWS and Office365).  A particular key stroke combination around the left hand side of the keyboard using caps, caps lock, tab or something similar whilst navigating in a table, Word was closing down completely and no document recovery was possible.

The frustrating thing is that it is very difficult to reproduce. Has anyone else seen this one?

I just tried on my outlook, still working fine.
you might want to do a scanpst or scanost to check if the pst is the problem and it might help to repair it.
there's also a chance, the addons or plugins might be causing the problem. open outlook in safe mode, before you hit enter on outlook shortcut, hold the ctrl key and it will triggle safe mode.
after you do the repair on your pst or ost, and safe mode makes your outlook works fine, then you just need to find out which addons is causing the problem.

Robin,

Well I am going to test what you say below as I’m answering you. I am going to save my draft before doing so just in case.

So far, I cannot duplicate and I have the same setup as you at work with the exception, my contacts are in the Cloud and not on my local ma chine. I have not noticed the behavior you describe but will be on the look out and report back if I do.

Hi,

Same problem here although if I am working on a message when crash occurs e-mail goes to my draft folder.  Issue does not occur every time but more often than not.  Again with the CTRL & 3 command keystrokes.

Interesting that three of us have seen the issue and a couple have not. At least I know it’s not just me.  I have not seen the issue in Word, as someone asked, but I’ll watch for it.  My home laptop is quirky (a.k.a.  I would not recommend that model to anyone) and there are always so many things being tweaked on our work network, so I often dismiss issues as unique to me.   Hopefully I’ll find that Curtis is right and JAWS 2022 fixes the issue, but I won’t be getting that installed here until the full release.

Hello Robin,

You can up your count to at least four people. That's not the only interesting quirk I've noticed recently though.

When I want to switch folders, I have to hit enter twice on the new folder. So, for example, I want to check my junk folder. I move to the folders list, arrow down to junk, and I hit enter. Nothing happens. If i hit enter again it will open the folder. The same thing happens when I move to deleted items or back to my inbox or whereever.

I have two ideas worth checking on. Who with this problem has Teams installed? I can't speak for the switching to contacts issue because I just realized I have it, but the pressing enter twice on a folder began sometime after I installed teams last week. Second, microsoft says they release new features of Office 365 slowly to users. It is possible that those of us with this problem have a different build. What build number does everyone have? Mine is 16.0.14326.20404.

Van Lant, Robin

Phillip,

That is interesting. I’ll have to test the issue you have in the navigation pane. I tend to use Control Y to switch folders, so I haven’t really tested the method you use.   I do have Teams installed on this PC and not on my home machine.   I am using Microsoft Outlook Subscription Version 16.0.13127.21736, so a slightly older version from you.

Robin,

I am not having the issue, as I reported yesterday. Here is my 365 info:

Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (16.0.14326.20384) 32-bit

Sounds like a newer version so possibly that is why?

Okay, it looks like we can rule out a specific build of Office 365 since this is happening with multiple builds. We can rule out a JAWS update because Robin has tried it with JAWS 2020. I'm about to uninstall teams and see what happens. I'll inform y'all of the results.

BINGO!

It's teams. I removed teams, restarted, and Outlook is working great. Control 3 works just like it should. I switched back and forth between Inbox, contacts, calendar, contacts, etc., several times without any issues. I am also only having to hit the enter key once to change folders.

Now, I have to reinstall teams, but at least I know why Outlook is acting funny.
