Moderated Help with page numbers, Please

Shirley Tracy

Hi everyone,

Can someone please tell me how to put numbers on a header that will progress with each new page. I have been able to type something on my headers, but adding a number is getting me frustrated. Everything comes out page 1. I know it can be done, but I haven’t tried it before with Office 2019—which is what I have now.

Thanks.

Greetings:

Position yourself in the header or footer where you want the page number to appear. Then, press Alt Shift P where you want the page number to appear in the document.

Kindly,

Curtis Chong

May I also recommend a great book from the National Braille Press called Format Your Word Documents with JAWS and NVDA? You can buy this book in a variety of formats. Well worth the money.

Hi Shirley,

This is how I do it.

  1. Alt I to Insert menu then arrow down to header and footer submenu and open it(right arrow).
  2. Arrow down to page number and press spacebar
  3. There are two submenus there, “Top” and “Bottom”
  4. On the Top submenu, right arrow and then arrow down to plain number 2 then hit enter
  5. you can then type in your header then hit tab to get good spacing between the header and the numbering
  6. then I do an alt H and escape twice. I haven’t figure out how to get out of editing the header mode. This work for me. HTH

Thanks for the help, and I will order the book. I didn’t think I needed it, because I don’t do this very much. And I didn’t realize how things have changed. the way most have described how to do the numbers in headers  didn’t work for me. I followed what others have offered, but I think Office -19 is different from what they have described. I put the number in but it was the same number for each page that followed.

Thanks to all of you for responding. This list is awesome.
