Hello List,

I am reasonably skilled in using JFW but I am at a loss in figuring out how to access content on my local newspaper site.  Can any of the mor advanced JFW users make any suggestions?  I should add that I am using Jaws with the latest edition of both JFW and Chrome.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Mark,

I can only access information using a braille display, so those using speech may have a different experience to me. But that site doesn’t like the usual JAWS HTML Navigation that’s for sure. Headings, Links, etc … but I can navigate it using TAB – although I don’t know if I am getting all of the information on the page.

Seems to me like all the content is just pictures of the paper.  If you could download them, you could recognize them using the jaws ocr image features, but even downloading seemed rather iffy because the links weren't really labeled.  Looks like you'd be better off getting your news elsewhere.

Hi Mark,

I went to the page and up front it's terrible. Try insert plus Z and it will work. Don't forget to do insert plus Z when you leave the page so Jaws will work normally again.

Greetings:

I took a quick look at this. The newspaper is, at best, clunky to read. With some experimentation and proper settings, you might be able to read the articles but not without a lot of up front work. There is even a listen option which produces speech which is abominably slow. It is not simply that the pages are pictures of text.

I am using JAWS latest and Chrome latest.

Sincerely,

Curtis Chong

FYI, and I don't know how much it may or may not help, in the Options dialog you can bring up on this page there is a checkbox for Enable Accessibility mode.  You can get to the Options button to bring it up in under 10 hits of Tab when the page is originally loaded.

You might want to give that a try and see if it results in any significant difference in accessibility.

I suggest calling them and asking about using more accessible formatting:

I found their contact number under account settings after clicking on a couple other links.  I hope it is worth your trouble.

With the accessible mode enabled I didn't have too much trouble reading articles. I use Jaws 2021 and Edge, I selected the Index, from there I was able to find sections/topics such as Business/Finance, CoronaVirus etc., after clicking on them I could then find individual articles and read them just fine.
