Moderated Editing the status line in Word with JAWS
Loreal Lavigna
I know I asked some months ago, but I’ve since upgraded everything on my laptop and cannot find this information. I want to edit what is spoken in the status line when the JAWS key plus Page Down is pressed. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Loreal,
Try the following:
The insert key with the page down (3) key on the number pad can give you the info. The page number should already be showing on the status bar but you can add column and line number. Move focus to the status bar by using function key 6. Press the application key or Shift + F10 and use down arrow in the menu. You should find Column and Line Number and you can press enter key on each of those to check them if you want those items to show on the status bar along with page number. Press escape after checking the items you want. Using the insert with number pad 3 should then read you all three of those items you mentioned. Stay safe & take care. Mike. Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say: "Close Enough!" ----- Original Message -----

Hey Mike,
So I did what you suggested and it seemed to work momentarily. I restarted my computer, reopened the document I was working in, and pressed the JAWS key plus page down to read the status line. It just says “Navigation.” I checked the status line and made sure the things I wanted read were checked, and they are. But it won’t read the status line with the keyboard shortcut. Any suggestions? For reference, I’m using a Windows 10 Professional 64-bit edition, with MS Office 365 Home and JAWS Professional 2021 with all updates up-to-date and installed.

Hi, Loreal. You might want to check in the view menu, and make sure that your document's zoom setting is set to 100%. There should be a button that says Zoom 100%. This could be one reason that the whole status line is not being read. Another reason could be that your document is not set to Print View. This is also located in the View Menu, and also in the Status Line. It is one of the things that would be checked when you use F6 to look at which things are checked to be read in the status line. I find that more of the status line is read when Print View is checked.

OK, Bill, so I checked and verified that the document is maximized, the view is set to print layout, and the zoom is at 100%. I also went into the status line and looked for print layout but didn’t see this. The only things I have checked presently are word count, page number, and line count. Any suggestions?

Yes. Go into View Menu with ALT plus W, and make sure that Print View is checked. If you still have trouble finding Print View, and you live in the United States, I will send you a private message, immediately after I send you this one, that will contain my telephone number, in case you wish to call me. I can JAWS Tandem into your computer, if you wish, or I can just walk you through the process.Q

For some time the Jaws shortcut key has not told me how many words in my document. It tells me where I am in the document, i.e. which line and which page and if I press the shortcut at the end of the document, whether it has any spelling errors, but if I want to know how many words, then I have to press f6 and tab three times. Loreal stated in one of her earliest emails in the thread that she is using Microsoft 365 and Jaws pro 2021 all updated….
I am running Jaws Home, but otherwise have the same setup.
I’m finding that doing the steps of f6 to Status bar, applications key and checking something like Word count, only works for that particular session. Once I close word and relaunch it, the Word Count item is still checked when I hit f6 and get to status bar, but the Jaws key plus page down does not read it unless I uncheck and check it again.
This is clearly one of Jaws’ most stupid issues in my very biased opinion. Why adding more options for some of you isn’t behaving the same way, makes it next to impossible for FS to duplicate and therefore fix it, but it is rather frustrating. I suspect especially so for Loreal since this impacts her job.
I have had other issues like this and the problem was fixed, apparently unintentionally, in a later Jaws update. Even after Eric Damery remoted into my machine and saw the behavior I was dealing with about 18 months ago they could not fix it. Yet, that issue has gone away…
Fingers crossed this will happily vanish soon.

Hello Richard:
In my version of Microsoft 365, 16.0.14228.20216, the settings for adding or removing something from the status bar are holding between successive iterations of Word. Why the behavior on my system is different than what you are experiencing is a mystery.

I am running Microsoft Word Subscription Version 16.0.14228.20226, notice my version ends in 26 while yours ends in 16. I wonder if Loreal is running the same one as me. Loreal, if you don’t know how to get the version number of Word with Jaws, open word and press insert+control+v
This is possibly the issue.
A certain place might freeze over before Microsoft would take responsibility for this, but I’ll drop a note to FS to see if they can duplicate it with this version of Word.

Hello Richard:
In my version of Microsoft 365, 16.0.14228.20216, the settings for adding or removing something from the status bar are holding between successive iterations of Word. Why the behavior on my system is different than what you are experiencing is a mystery.
Kind regards,

Greetings:
I am also wondering if the version of Office you are running is the Microsoft 365 version, the retail version, or a version which was acquired through the Microsoft Store. Some of the folks with whom I have worked have inadvertently picked up the store version, and when I checked with Freedom Scientific, I was told that Store version (as differentiated from the subscription version) is not the one we should be using. This is just an off-the-wall question which may or may not get at the heart of this vexing issue.
Kind regards,
Curtis Chong

Hi Loreal,
After opening the document, have you tried to switch windows with, Alt + tab, to see if the document might be opening in another window?

Yes, the window is maximized. I’ve tried it with multiple documents, but with the same results.
