I have a 150 page PDF which is tagged and passed the accessibility checker and PDF/UA checkers.

However, when I test it in Adobe Reader on JAWS, JAWS reads to the bottom of the page and stops. Hitting the arrow key just repeats the last word on the page like it's reached the end of the document. CTRL + Page Down does advance you to the next page, but takes you to the last line on the next page which is obviously far from an ideal experience for the end user. Insert + Down Arrow (Say All) only reads current page.

I have tried changing the accessibility and reading settings to (a) read the entire document, (b) large documents read current page and changing size of large document to a minimum of 200 pgs (longer than this pdf), and (c) read single page continuous. None of them worked.

The document is due to my client today and would be good to go if not for this weird issue. In 10 years of pdf remediation, I've never encountered this problem before.

Because I have an NDA, I cannot share the file.

I sure can't think of anything else to try.  If I were in that situation, I'd use k1000 to scan the document and hope it didn't scan too bad.

Here's a stab.  Is your pdf online?  To advance an online pdf I've had to use the page number selection in Adobe Reader, a very inefficient way of moving from page to page.  Look for a Download button and download it.  Then it will work normally according to your settings.

 

No guarantees, but that's been my experience.

One thing to try is to go to the file menu in Adobe Reader PC and select the option to save the document as a text file.  This will open the document in Notepad as a .txt file and eliminate all those page breaks, and you should then be able to read the document  from beginning to end.

I've had the same issue for a while now. Nothing that I've tried has helped. Hopefully someone has a resolution.

One more thought - have you adjusted large document handling to Read The Entire Document. You can also specify the number of pages that constitute a large document.

Personally I would give up on Adobe and open it in another reader.
Good free options include Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge which provide pretty good accessible PDF reading. In Edge you can even use immersive reader / read aloud options which provide a nice alternative for narration if you fancy a change from your screen reading voice.

So I figured it out and I'm not sure which worked or whether it was the combination.
Set Adobe preferences to Read the Entire Document (as I had tried before) and Unchecked Enhanced Security.

One thing that may have tricked me is that when set to Read Entire Doc, it takes much longer to load in JAWS but neither JAWS nor Adobe has any indicator that it is indeed loading. So it appears nothing is happening and it didn't work.

Have you tried scanning the document using the Jaws key and space-bar then o then d.

 

I find that helps sometimes.

 

Or else try to open the file in Word. Just open Word then open the file from there. It should convert to word.
