Moderated Download alerts with Edge

Joseph Norton

Hi all:

I have the latest JAWS and my Windows 10 updates are current.

When I run Edge, and I download a file, JAWS now does not repeat download status.

In the past, this has been annoying, at times, because those alerts interrupt any other speech.  But, it am now unaware if/when a download finishes.

I found that the alerts are still spoken with Chrome.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks!

Hi, Joseph. For a long time, I have been using Download Sound, which is an AddOn for Chrome, and if you check "Allow Extensions from Other Stores, under Settings and More>Extensions, you can add Download Sound to Microsoft Edge. This way, I always know when a download has completed. Also, Download Sound gives you a notification if the download failed or was successful.

Hi again, Joseph. If you want to hear Edge alerts for downloads, once you have pressed ENTER on a download link, press CONTROL plus J to take you to the downloads section. After you have pressed CONTROL plus J, you will once again hear your download alerts.

Hi again listers:

Well, I found out what was wrong with the download alerts in Edge.
I'm always worried I hit something and messed things up, but, it was
not so. Here's a message I just got from Vispero support:

Hello Joseph:
Microsoft updated Edge. They changed the location of the download
alert from the lower left of the screen to the upper right. You can
still access the download info by pressing control j for the downloads
folder then tab to your current download in the list. Development is
awear of the issue.

Regards,

Sarai

Hope this helps.

Hi, Joseph. I don't know if you got my email the other day in which I stated that if you press CONTROL plus J, the alerts will begin voicing immediately, as soon as you press CONTROL plus J. You don't even need to find the file being downloaded.

Hi Bill:

No, I did get the note, and I am glad you told me what I could do, just in case I had no solution.  However, it didn’t actually answer my question.  I am well aware of the CTRL+J thing, but, what I wanted to know was why the alerts stopped being spoken.  As you can see, this was adequately answered by someone at Vispero who told me about the change, which none of you, were aware of, apparently.  Please understand, this is no reflection of any of you folks.  When something on my computer suddenly stops working as I am used to, I go and investigate the issue.  I try to fix it, and I investigate what is happening, and, I ask questions, until I figure out why things have changed.  I even restored my Windows backup, to see if Edge had changed, and, that’s what I concluded, since, after an update, the alerts stopped being spoken by JAWS.  Edge updates itself, and you may or may not know it when it happens.  Vispero just confirmed what I suspected and explained the change in more detail.

Thanks again.

Those buttons are there, but I found they are easier to access if you use tab to get to them. I just find the first download in the list and then press tab, the first time the Open button gains focus and the second time I press tab Save As has focus and I can press spacebar or enter to activate it.
In the Brave browser if you select to be asked where you want to save your download the Save As dialogue simply opens up when you press enter on a download link, there is no prompt to press GF6 to do to a downlaods bar or anything, just press enter and you are asked what you want to call the file and you can then leave the name it has or change it, then tab to the folder treeview and select your folder just like you would when you select Save As in any other application. It's super simple and I think Brave may just become my primary browser permanently.

Hi, Alison. What version of JAWS are you using? If I have downloads set to ask me where I want to put the download each time, and I also have Edge show me the download menu when the download starts, I can TAB to the Save As button, and once I press that, I can also TAB to the place where I choose where to put the download, and I can also TAB to the Save button, once I have made a decision as to where the download will go. This may not work if you are using a JAWS version earlier than JAWS 2020.

I am using the current version of Jaws

Bill White

Hi, Alison. Edge seems to work a bit differently on different machines. Here's what I do to get to the settings in edge for downloads.

1. Open Edge.
2. Press ALT, followed by the letters F, then S for Settings.
3. If you have Forms mode set to automatic, press SHIFT plus TAB to get out of the search box. If you have forms mode set to Manual, skip step 3.
4. Press CONTROL plus HOME to get to the top of the Settings page.
5. Press the letter B until you hear JAWS say, Settings menu, button, menu, and press ENTER.
6. TAB once to reach the list of Settings Categories.
7. Arrow down to Downloads, and press ENTER.
8. If you want Edge to ask you each time where to save a download, uncheck the box which says, Ask me what to do with each download
9. Check the box that says, Show downloads menu when a download starts
10. Now, each time you download something with Edge by pressing ENTER on the Download link, you may just here silence, because Edge has changed, and JAWS won't read the download alert.
11. To get around this, Press CONTROL plus J to focus on the Downloads dialog.
12. TAB through the various questions, including, What do you want to do with "filename"?. TAB to Save As, and press ENTER.
13. Now you will be able to choose how you wish to name the file, as well as where you want it to go.
14. TAB some more, and you will see a Save button. Press ENTER, and you will immediately begin hearing the progress of your download.

If in step 8, you choose to have files always save to the downloads folder by unchecking the box which says, Ask me what to do with each download, all you need to do is to press ENTER on the download link, Press CONTROL plus J, and you will begin to hear the progress of your download without having to perform steps 12 through 14.
