moderated jaws 2021 problems.
Patrick Murphy <murphy.patrick42@...>
Hi,
I haven’t posted here in a while, so bare with me if this has been covered. A simple one first. Jaws 2021 speaks the count and position of shortcuts on the desktop, files in a folder etc. For example: It will say “file.pdf 1 of 20” If the folder has 20 files in it. I have just upgraded from jaws 2018. 2018 did not say the number or position of the file in the folder. Is there a way to turn this off? I only want to know the name of the file, not what position it is in the list, or how many files are in the directory.
The second thing: I mentioned this before, but wondered if anyone since has encountered this. I have raised a ticket about it with sight and sound in the uk. When jaws 2021 loads, you cannot use “insert+j” to bring up the jaws menu. You have to quit jaws and start it again. I mentioned this problem before with jaws 2020 (demo version), but i thought it might go away, now that i have been able to purchase the full version of jaws 2021. However, it has not. I have tried all the usual, uninstall reinstall, repair, etc. Jaws 2018 is not on the computer now. The only thing that i have left is to uninstall jaws 2021, remove any files or folders with “freedom scientific” on it, clean the registery with ccleaner, and then reinstall jaws 2021.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if i am rambling.
Stay safe,
Pat

Patrick, Curious, have you tried using alternate Insert keys with J to see if that works? For me, I cannot get the JAWS menu to open with the caps lock key, but it works with the numpad 0 or the standard insert key.

I talked to FS about your second problem. All they could suggest is forcing jaws to load later in the startup sequence. That didn’t fix it for me. What fixed it for me was moving my system to a faster SSD drive. I didn’t expect that result, but it was welcome.

Hi Patrick,
For your 1st problem:
1. Open the Settings Center with, Jaws key +
6, on the number row and then press, control, shift + D, to open the Settings
Center default all applications.
2. Down arrow to, Speech verboscity closed,
right arrow to open. Down arrow 1 time to hear what verboscity level
you're running, and now down arrow 1 more time to, Configure verboscity levels
closed, and right arrow to open.
3. Down arrow to your verboscity level..., and
press the spacebar to open. Don't press enter only use the spacebar right
here.
4. The first item in the list is, Announce
position and count when navigating in lists, if this is checked press the
spacebar to uncheck it.
5. Tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, tab to,
Apply, press the spacebar, and tab to, Okay, press enter to save and
close.
Stay safe and take care. Mike.

hi, thanks for all your help. the verbosity problem is solved. however, for the jaws not loading problem, i found a curious thing. i am connecting wirelessly to my router. if i use the 2.4 ghz band, jaws loads correctly. if i use the 5ghz band, the problem occurs. i have tried this now with three different computers, all with the same result. this brings me back to the original problem i had in 2020, when someone mentioned the "grace period authorization". i now firmly believe, that this is the problem. jaws is trying to authorize itself too fast, and then doesn't load correctly. the 2.4 ghz band is slower than the 5ghz band, but not by much. however, it seems to be enough, to make the problem go away. the only thing now, is that i cannot use the 5ghz band on my router without unloading and reloading jaws 2021. i reported this to errick dammery in freedom scientific when it started last year. if there is anyone on this forum from freedom scientific, could you please pay attention to what is being said? again, sorry for rambling, but you would have thought, that this problem would be solved, as it now spans two versions of jaws. god knows, we pay enough for it!!!. i know which band on my router i am connecting to, as the 2.4 and 5 ghz bands have separate ssids. regards and thanks, pat.

Hi Pat, That seems like a very good diagnosis on your part. I’d recommend sending your email again to Eric and to the Jaws support link, as some times it takes a couple tries to get their attention. I had an issue that is finally solved in 2021 that went back to 2019 and it took several tries to get their attention. They are rather busy, so I’m not blaming anyone, just pointing out that the old saying is true: “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

Hi Richard,
thanks for that. by any chance, do you have email addresses for these? i have raised a support ticket with sight and sound in the U.K. yesterday, but to date, they have only sent the standard "thanks for your email" reply.
at this stage, its really annoying that this problem still exists.

It has something to do with timings. I connected through a wired connection and it didn't work right until I installed a faster ssd drive.

success!!!! you will see below, that after two versions of jaws, (2020 and 2021), vispero has eventually admitted, that this problem in fact, does exist. apparently, they are looking into it. below is the email i got from Cory jackson at vispero, after poking and prodding forever. the squeaking wheel always gets the grease. regards, pat email below: Hello Patrick, I find what you have discovered about this issue very intresting. Would it be possible for you to run the technical support tool under the Jaws help menu in order to send us a report so that we can look in to this further? Hi Mike,
Sorry, it was the original topic. When jaws starts up, you cannot get at the menus. You have to unload and reload it. When jaws is set to start at the logon screen and to start for this user, insert+j or any other key is not available to get at the menus. When you unload and reload it, it works just fine. When I started the topic, I had a huge rant about it!! You will see it from the start. It doesn’t happen to everyone, in fact, I have only found two other people that it happens to. Nevertheless, it is a bug, and should be fixed, given the amount of money we pay for the product. As you can see from my previous post, this has been confirmed by Vispero.

I’m with Mike, that would be a total pain. And like Mike, I needed the reminder to know what the issue was. There are too many emails on this list to keep track without the context being included.
I’m glad they are paying attention.
With Jaws 2019 and 2020, none of my standard desktop shortcuts that I had made would work. I even had Eric Damery remote in to see the issue and they never really got it resolved. But, for some reason, it is resolved now in Jaws 2021. That too was a case of only a few people had the issue. I hope your issue gets resolved sooner.

Hopefully you were able to run the technical support tool so Jaws can in fact try and get a better handle on this, after all, if it affects so few people those who are affected need to do their part. Of course unloading and reloading Jaws is a work-around which doesn't require you to go out of your way that much, another one might be to run Narrator when Windows starts, i.e. at the logon screen, and to see if that fixes the issue. A few years ago one of my 4 computers at my store (it was an identical model to one of my others) would not let me read the Windows Start menu with Jaws, nor Settings or any Windows apps like Calculator. If I went into settings Jaws would just be absolutely silent, visually I could move through the categories and if I arrowed right, for example, 3 times and pressed enter Network and Internet would open, but as I said, Jaws would not make a peep. This went on for over a year and any time I had to do anything in Settings on that computer I had to unload Jaws and use Narrator. Then at one point I read something on a list, can't remember which one, where somebody had this issue and they had figured out the solution. The problem was that for some reason a setting in Group Policy Editor (this was a Windows pro version) had been changed. It took me all of 20 seconds to change it back and from then on all was well, Jaws read everything fine again. I may have made a note somewhere what this was, but I can't remember now and don't feel like digging around to look it up, but this goes to show how one small little setting can make a huge difference and cause a pretty major headache for a very small number of people.
Best regards, Sieghard

Patrick Murphy <murphy.patrick42@...>
HiSieghard,
Of course, as requested, I ran the report, sent it to them, provided my email and followed up to insure that they got it. As I am sure you have seen from my previous emails, a technical rep in vespero itself admitted to having this problem also. I would say, that for the vast majority of people on this forum, they have windows home edition, which as you know, does not have the group policy editor as part of it. Correct me if I am wrong. As a result, if this problem is related to group policies, which clearly it is not, there would be no way to fix it on a home edition. You are right in that unloading and reloading is not a huge thing, but if I am paying for a product, I expect it to work correctly. There is absolutely no excuse for poor development of a product!! I was a software developer for over 25 years, and when a problem was reported to me, I either fixed it directly, or it was fixed in the next release of the software.
