Moderated Two questions regarding Jaws 2021.

Good afternoon everyone,

First, how would I go about doing a repair of Jaws 2021,  and can you remove a specific  update.  ,  I’m asking because whenever my computer boots up, I keep getting a lot of lost focus messages. Next, after I type whatever the subject line and tab to the edit field,  it indicates a dash

Second, In the settings menu under the utilities option,  there isn’t anything about  enabling the  voice assistant.

Thanks in advance

for any and all help advice and suggestions,

Al

I hope someone can answer about removing updates, but I am doubtful that can be done.

You can run the .exe file that you used to install Jaws 2021 and you will have an option to repair.

For me, the first item under Utilities is the voice assistant.

Are you sure you are on 2021?

I thought there was an option about the lost focus messages, but I’m not finding it right now.

HTH,

Richard

Well, for me, Voice Assistant is right above Tandem.

Maybe someone who knows much more than I, which is a lot of people, can say if there is somewhere else you have to enable it first?

do you have a microphone on your computer or laptop or one that you can plug-in? If you don't have a microphone maybe it doesn't show up. This is just guessing though. As for removing an update you can't do that the download you have to get from freedom scientific is already updated. If you have an old EXC you can use that and not update but short of that no you can't remove an update.

Hi Richard and T,

What I meant too say, was that when I went into the settings center in the Jaws utility folder, I didn’t see anything about enabling voice assistant.

What I find interesting about this is that I turned it off, yet, it still shows up under utilities with all of the features grayed out other than settings and getting started.

But, I do have a microphone on this laptop, so maybe that is the issue?

Hi Tom,

If you're not running Windows 10 you won't get the Voice Asisstant option.  If you're running Windows 7 the Voice Asisstant isn't available.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Hi Al,

Are you running Windows 7 or 10?  The Voice Asisstant won't show in Windows 7 since it's not availble for Windows 7.

For your Focus problem, try opening quick settings with, Jaws key + V, and type, focus, in the search field.
When the results populate you should have 1 result, Focus loss announcement, make sure this is unchecked.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Jaws uninstall is an all-or-nothing thing on a per-version basis. That
is, you can remove jaws 2021 but leave jaws 2020 (or vise versa) but
not remove the latest jaws 2021 update and go back to the prior
version.

I suspect to go back to a prior version you would need to uninstall
jaws and then use the installer for that prior version and then when
jaws runs say "No" if it asks if you wish to install the latest
update.

I would suggest that before you go to the work of uninstalling that
you re-run the jaws installer (possibly downloading the latest
installer exe from the web if you don't have it handy) and use it to
perform a repair.

I have noticed that in older versions of JAWS, when I would close a program, JAWS would focus on the program or desk top that I hade open.  Now, I get the Lost Focus announcement when closing programs.  Why doesn’t JAWS know where to focus any more?

Mike.

I have no Voice Assist either.  I am running JAWS 21 on a Windows 7 computer.

Well, for me, Voice Assistant is right above Tandem.

Maybe someone who knows much more than I, which is a lot of people, can say if there is somewhere else you have to enable it first?

Hi,

On occasion JAWS does go to the next open window but like you I am seeing an increasing number of “Lost Focus” announcements. I realize that the OS and systems are continually changing yet I would like to see JAWS developers make this fix a priority.

Hi,

“Lost Focus” announcements will continue no matter the repairs or installs.  This is an ongoing issue that Freedom really needs to get a handle on .

Interesting.  I wonder if this has anything to do with a verbosity setting.  I have never gotten a lost focus message, but I've always tried to reduce unnecessary verbiage from jaws whenever I found a way.

The problem occurs whether or not you get the message.  Sometimes JAWS loses focus and just stops speaking.  Then after I tab away and back to current window JAWS works again.
