Moderated Question On Importing Internet Explorer Favorites Into Google Chrome

Tom Behler

Hello again, everyone.

I recently have imported my Internet Explorer favorites into Google Chrome, but currently, they are in a separate list called “imported from Windows Internet Explorer.

How can I migrate this list over to the main bookmarks bar in Google Chrome?

I did this once, but can’t recall how I did it.

I’m using the latest Jaws 2021 update on a Windows 10 PC here.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, Tom. To move the bookmarks imported from Internet Explorer,

1. Open Google Chrome.

2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus O to open Bookmarks Manager.

3. TAB to the folders list, and open Imported from Internet Explorer.

4. TAB to the list of bookmarks, and select all with CONTROL plus A.

5. Press the Applications key or SHIFT plus F10, and Arrow down to CUT, and press ENTER.

6. Open the folder to which you want to move the bookmarks.

7. Perform a paste operation with CONTROL plus V.

That should move them all at once to the new folder.

Bill:

I tried a similar set of steps, but couldn’t find the main bookmarks folder.

I think the main bookmarks folder in Google Chrome is called “bookmarks bar”.

The strange thing is that I now have two lists of bookmarks in Google Chrome.

One list is called “imported from Internet Explorer”, while the other is accessed when I do an alt F followed by the letter B. for bookmarks.  I am assuming that this latter folder is the main bookmarks bar folder, but I can’t seem to copy and paste into it.

Let me know if I’m heading in a useful direction, or where I might be going wrong.

Appreciate the help as always.

Hi, Tom. The place you're going wrong is that, to access the Bookmarks Bar for more than just clicking a bookmark, you must use CONTROL plus SHIFT plus O to access Bookmarks Manager in Chrome. Once you open Bookmarks Manager with CONTROL plus SHIFT plus O, TAB twice to get to the Bookmarks Bar. If you are unable to do it, you can give me a call, and I can walk you through it over the phone, or we can do a JAWS Tandem, and I can find out why your Bookmarks Bar isn't showing up.

The problem is that when I go to the Bookmark Manager and then try to open the list of favorites imported from IE so that I can copy and paste them into the list of Chrome bookmarks, it takes forever.  I have about 250 favorites imported from IE, and when I try to open the list under the bookmark manager, my computer goes silent for about a half hour while each favorite is opened without completing the operation, and so I just cancel it, because who knows how long it will take.  It's just too much of a hassle to merge the two lists into one.

I never import into chrome, I just keep the old favorites folder and
its easy to add a new page to that list by doing control-l and copying
the text to the clipboard and then you can go to your favorites folder
and create a shortcut and you are done and you never have to fool with
all those horrible bookmark folder. I have this folder sorted by
date, so its really cool that way.

Yes, That's the way I do it, too, John. I have made a shortcut to the Favorites folder located in C:\users\"Username"\, and can select any favorite from that folder, or drop newly created shortcuts into that folder. The thing I might warn of is that after August of this year, Internet Explorer will no longer be supported. If they take Internet Explorer away in a future update of Windows 10, that Favorites folder may go away. So I would suggest copying that folder to another location before Internet Explorer is removed from Windows 10, and there is a chance that Windows will remove that folder as well.

Hi Tom,

Let me chime in to agree with others on a strong preference for continuing to use the IE favorites rather than the clunky bookmarks in Chrome. One thing to add: when you open something from the Favorites folder, it will open in your default browser, not IE, even though you created them in IE. I very much hope that Microsoft changes its current Edge favorites to using the favorites folder in the user folder soon. Although called favorites in Edge, the whole structure is that of bookmarks in Chrome. If the big selling point of Edge is that it is supposedly part of the Windows operating system, then it should use the Favorites folder in the user folder. Creating favorites is the only thing I still use IE for.

Hi David/all,

Until Microsoft does this though, presumably there's no reason why VFO couldn't create a script to bring up a list of favourites as they do links, headings etc.

What are we paying all that money for, after all,

Cheers,

Ed
