Moderated Run Dialogue & Websites

Hi Mike
Sounds like the default browser, but see that you have checked that.
If I recall correctly it may be file associations that need looking at. I suspect HTTPS:// is not associated correctly.
I would try switching default browsers to see if that fixes it. If not then Google may hold the answer by adding in file association.
Thanks
Tim

Hi Loy,
This is what the lady is wondering, why the
Run dialogue isn't working. She knows she can open a browser but, that's
not answering the question.

I also tried typing Microsoft.com just in the search and it opened it. I don't
see a need of doing this when you can open the browser first and type in the
URL.

When you type a URL into the Windows "Run" dialogue
box, you must include "http://", "https://", "www.", (without the quotes) or,
something similar, before the designated name of the URL. If you do not, you
will get the Windows error message , that the designated name of the URL
cannot be found and you should make sure the name is entered correctly and try
again.

Just to throw some confusion into the mix, if you are trying to reach the mobile version of FaceBook, it is m.facebook.com The word basic will draw up an error like he said. I don't know if you are paying for the Eset security or not but I had to get rid of it. They claimed to be a part of Microsoft at one time and Microsoft doesn't contract with anyone to do their work. A lesson I learned after having to have MS clean up a mess they had made on my computer. However, typing in something like mbasic.facebook.com will not work. Windows has no way of telling that it’s supposed to be a URL.
As to the problem this person is having – it’s just a thought, but do they have any third party security software running? Perhaps try temporarily disabling it. Maybe it is preventing file explorer (which controls the run dialogue box) from invoking a browser.

If it was saying something like file not found, be sure they used http:// and if it is a secure site, https:// and as Glen said, some sites don’t use the www. Just the http:// or https:// part.

Hi All,
I ran into a strange problem on a friend's Windows 7 Home computer. When you type a URL into the Run Dialogue nothing happens! I checked to make sure a browser was selected as the default and that all program associations were selected but, still nothing happens when you press enter on a URL from the Run Dialogue.
You can type, Notepad, or other commands into the Run Dialogue and you'll go straight to them but, for whatever reason URL's don't work, so to speak. Can anyone shed some light on how to fix this issue? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Yeah, seems worth a shot. If it works, then there’s probably some configuration option in eset that can be changed to let these things through.
