Moderated Please help--MS update question

This morning, there was a notice of a Windows update. I didn’t think much about it…until I let it update. Now, things aren’t working the same. Does anyone have a problem reading lines or words? And how do I stop JAWS from saying “select” and “not selected” for nearly everything?

And if things don't settle down, it will be important to know what update(s) were applied. Presuming this is Windows 10, you can determine that in Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update Pane, using the View Update History button. The most likely pertinent candidates are either under Feature Updates (less likely, but possible) or Quality Updates. The "Successfully installed on" line will give you the respective dates.

Thanks everyone who responded. I Did give my computer a chance to settle down. I even rebooted. But I’m having trouble reading lines and words. And I’m tired of hearing “select.” I’m taking your advice, Brian, and will check the kind of update for my Windows 10. Perhaps I should not have allowed the update until I knew more. I’ll keep you posted.

What do you mean when you say you're having
problems reading words and lines?
For the selected and unselected being spoken,
try the following:
1. Press, Insert + 6, on the number
row above the main keyboard to open the Settings Center, now press, control,
shift , + D, to open the Settings Center Default All Applications.
2. Down arrow to, Text Processing closed, and
right arrow to open.
3. Down arrow to, General closed, and right
arrow to open.
4. Down arrow to, List Item, and here you want
to press the spacebar to toggle through your options. When you hear Jaws
report, Unselected, stop.
5. Tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to,
Okay, press enter to save and close.

It didn’t say the update was or was not successful. I assume it was.

You're certainly not alone, as that's the latest cumulative update that's in the process of rolling out. I cannot remember the JAWS terminology, and this may be it, but you may need to virtualize the Update History screen in order to have the line after the one that is the link for a given update read. It will tell you if the update was successful, or failed, and give the date or date/time (respectively, I think, it's been a while since I've had a failure). I'm not running JAWS at the moment, so I can't say much of anything with regard to this cumulative update and JAWS other than there seems to be no widespread chatter about JAWS issues and this cumulative update. To be thorough, the minus key is the top right key on the numpad and after you are done, press the plus key to go back to the standard PC/virtual cursor.

Are you sure about the 1942 part of that number?

You're running an older version. The
latest is, 20H2, not 2004, and it's OS version 19042.685. This newer 20H2
version is using 19042 where the older 2004 versions are at 19041.

Yes, that’s what it said, and I copied and pasted in. I check and it said I had the latest update. But something isn’t right. I’m going to have to get a sighted person to look at what I’m reading. (But…after I checked settings, things went back to normal. Don’t ask me why.) I have no idea.

Shirley, With your problem with JAWS saying selected when moving. I got that if I had one of the mouse buttons locked. Are you sure neither mouse button is locked? It is easy to do by mistake when navigating around.

Richard,
Don't force the issue. Windows will send
you the update in due time. I don't know what criteria they use as to who
and what computers get the updates but, if you haven't received the, 20H2,
update yet Microsoft is finding a reason to not send you the update and updating
prematurely could cause adverse reactions to your operating system or in other
words,be a total pain in the ass!

what update(s) were applied. Presuming this is Windows 10, you can
determine that in Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update Pane, using
the View Update History button. The most likely pertinent candidates are
either under Feature Updates (less likely, but possible) or Quality
Updates. The "Successfully installed on" line will give you the respective

After sending that I did a little more reading and will wait to see when it pops up.
I hadn't known they changed the version number from 2004, so I've learned something today, which is good.

I have thought about forcing the update, but have decided to just let it happen when it will.

Don't force the issue. Windows will send you the update in due time. I don't know what criteria they use as to who and what computers get the updates but, if you haven't received the, 20H2, update yet Microsoft is finding a reason to not send you the update and updating prematurely could cause adverse reactions to your operating system or in other words,be a total pain in the ass!

The latest is, 20H2, not 2004, and it's OS version 19042.685. This newer 20H2 version is using 19042 where the older 2004 versions are at 19041.
