Hi everyone,
With all the latest talk about Jarte, and how it may be going away eventually due to lack of development, I was wondering what other free word processors work well with Jaws? How about Open Office or Libre Office?
Any other suggestions?

Even if they work, they're no good IMHO. If you need a free WOrd Processor, use Google Docs.

hi,
I didn't followed the thread about Jarte, but as a piece of advice, if you're going to use a word processor on a regular basis, let's say college, I won't recommend any free word processor, I plunged myself into searching for an acceptable piece of software, but in the end, I ended up resorting to MS Word. Of course, this really depends on the user's needs and expectations. Every once in a while and to do the shopping list, wordpad is a good alternative.

Hi, Ann, This was such a great question. I know someone who needs a different wordprocessor until they can get MS Word again. Someone suggested Google Docs. A month or two ago, I would not have recommended it. However, this was because I never had any luck with it. I was wondering, what if someone is not always near a WI-FI connection, will Google Docs still work, or would another program work better? I'm just curious.
Sincerely, Jasmine

I have never used Google Docs precisely because of this problem but apparently checking on Google last week there are instructions for using Google docs offline. As far as I can see though this is certainly not the default and ironically you need to be online to make this setting change. So I imagine that if, for example, your Wi-Fi suddenly goes down you may indeed be locked out of all your documents. Someone who actually uses Google Docs may be able to comment definitely on this though. David G. Sent from Mail for Windows 10

I would not depend on Google Docs. Open Office works fine until someone can get Word.I am not sure about the other one that has been mentioned Libre or something like that.

Hi. OpenOffice and LibreOffice are very similar and they may appear
identical on the surface, especially for users of screen readers.
However, OpenOffice has a very slow development cycle. LibreOffice
receives many more updates and feature additions and should offer
even better compatibility with more complex Office files. Therefore,
I highly recommend LibreOffice over OpenOffice.

Thanks to David, I went and looked at the LibreOffice web site. It is the successor to Open Office, according to their site, so yes, go with LibreOffice. Here is the link:

Two things.
I’m pasting the link to the help documentation online so you can read through its offerings.
Also, it is very sluggish with both Jaws and NVDA. There is a dealy after each character when you arrow over it or when you type.
If I had to depend on this for all my Office type needs, I think this would get frustrating.
Are there scripts or settings that can be changed to help this?

LibreOffice includes the following:
- Writer: Word Processor
- Calc: Spreadsheet
- Impress: Presentations (think PowerPoint)
- Base: Database Manager (think MS-Access)
- Draw: Diagram maker
- Math: Mathematical formula editor
The Discover dropdown on the LibreOffice Main Page gets into each of these, and more, in detail --

You might want to check to make sure accessibility is set right
in libre-ofice. I'm not having the issues you mention about
sluggishness or something strange being spoken after character
movement. There is an accessibility section under tools/options,
the first checkbox probably needs checked.

I don’t know what this sluggishness might be dependent upon, but the experience you report is not mine. I do not remember modifying any settings in particular. I find Libre to be snappier than mS office, but that doesn’t really make it better as there are other factors to consider as well. Still, speed in responsiveness has never been an issue for me. To verify, I just opened up Libre Writer with first jaws and then nVDA. No complaints about speed, but using JAWS 2018 at least, the menus are not read without using the JAWS cursor, which is a pain. This is not the case with NVDA, and I *think* Freedom scientific may have fixe this in the newer/latest JFW versions most of you are using.

Well, with Jaws 2021 the menus read fine.
However, in case you didn’t know, the “Support assistive technology tools (program restart required) check box‑ checked‑ “ checks itself apparently when it detects a screen reader.
I tried unchecking it, applying the changes, hitting OK and restarting LibreOffice to see if it made a difference and since it made no difference, I checked again and low and behold, it was checked again without my doing anything.
Conclusion, my system doesn’t like LibreOffice.
It certainly isn’t unusable, and if I need something other than Microsoft Office for a CSV file format or something, I will use this, but for me, it would never replace Microsoft Office. But, I am glad it is there for those who cannot
afford Microsoft’s products.

Aha..so there is. I had forgotten about that. That still doesn’t make old JFW versions read the menus, but hey…yeah, make sure that’s checked.
You might want to check to make sure accessibility is set right in libre-ofice. I'm not having the issues you mention about sluggishness or something strange being spoken after character movement. There is an accessibility section under
tools/options, the first checkbox probably needs checked.

Interesting. Wonder if you have something going on with display
drivers or some such. To me, programs other than Microsoft Office
aren't going to get the speech support, and if you've have to deal
with files from ms office, you'd better stick with it. Nothing is
more miserable than a botched file conversion, and you never know
how good conversions will actually be. I have found that
Libreoffice and other programs are useful when you hit files that
MS doesn't bother supporting anymore. I found a .wri file a while
back, and MS wouldn't read it even though it came from old Windows
Write. I used either Openoffice or Libreoffice and it had no
trouble.

LibreOffice supports all MS-Office file formats natively. No conversions are necessary, and it can save in those formats natively, too. --

Hello all,
My last comment on this is that for me, and again, just for me, Office is amazingly snappy, but LibreOffice, even using its own format with a fresh document, is sluggish.
So, if I need it to open and convert an old file type or something, but I personally cannot recommend it based on my experience.
Open Office actually was snappier, but as David pointed out, it is no longer being developed now that LibreOffice is the focus of that project.
I will drop them some feedback but this is no big deal to me, I was just checking it out.
I’m done now.

Yeah, I've never experienced sluggishness either,
and I haven't made any changes with it.
Maybe it's something in the most recent Libra, as
mine is not updated.

It does. But I guess questioning whether, for instance, complicated formatting done with libre will translate effectively to MS when someone accesses your documents using the more commercial product is a fair question, and it’s one I don’t really know the answer to. For most people though, I don’t *think* it’d be a problem.
