FS has not updated Open book for many years and since OCR is built in to Jaws I don't think Open Book will ever be updated.

How does OCR exactly work? I too have open book 9.0 and it always reverts back to the factory setting, slower then molasis in January. Yes, I did contact Vispero and he got it to work properly. Only problem was as soon as I turned off the computer then booted it up again, I had the same problem. Thus will the OCR be able to read scanned bills or letters the way open book is supposed too?

I haven' tused the ocr in JAWS for a while.

Is it as good as open book?

It wasn't a few years ago, so for me, open book worked better, but I guess
JAWS 2021 is great then?

The key with Openbook is to adjust your settings as you want them and then save the settings.
I have my most often used settings that I saved over top of the factory settings, so when I start it up, it uses the modified default settings.
You can save as many settings configurations as you want, just give them different names.
If the FS person who helped you did not have you save those settings, then you need to recreate them, and then save the settings either over the default, or with a unique name that you then have to load each time you boot up...

The FS rep did save the settings. At least save settings was pressed. It is a mystery why the settings were not saved.

They were probably saved with a different file name.
If you go to the settings menu and pick load settings, see what you have.

Just to say that I personally found that the download link  for the English 32 and 64 bit version did not work even after multiple  presses of the enter on the link, even executing from the the links list did not work.

However I eventually got it down by bringing up the context menu and selecting save link as in Chrome and that brought the latest install down OK.

Hi,

Just a quick note of caution.  If you have JAWS 2020 or 2021 installed Openbook 9.0 will not install properly.  This from my own experience and after talking with Freedom this was the steps I needed to take.

Uninstall JAWS 2020 or 2021

Update or install Openbook 9.0

Re install JAWS 2020 or 2021.

The reason is that JAWS and Openbook use  the same OCR components.  JAWS has newer ones than Openbook and Openbook will hang at install unless you follow procedure above. This is from own personal experience and after checking with Freedom Scientific after I encountered the issue.

Unless someone gives different experience or has updated information that was the latest I have from Freedom and my own situation.

Again, just wanted to put the details out for a caution.

I believe you might be correct. Other than a 2018 window dressing with a
few languages added they seem to have abandoned the product. I find that
even mobile scanning on my phone has about as good OCR. I look for the
OCR component to become a full function of JAWS.

I was on the Openbook beta team, and since too many years ago to count, nothing has been said about Openbook even to the beta team.
It would be nice to get a definitive statement from Vispero about this, but I guess so long as they can still sell a $1000 OCR package to people, they will even though the only functionality I can find in it that isn't in other either mobile phone apps or the Jaws OCR is the ability to scan facing pages of a book and have them split into two pages automatically.

VAUGHN:  Right.  And is there an update coming to OpenBook?  Or is it one of those products that it doesn’t need any of this stuff?

ERIC:  There is not an update coming for OpenBook.  I wouldn’t anticipate any changes there.  We will continue to evolve optical character recognition solutions for our other products.  But I think, as you say, you’re the type of a user that OpenBook is perfect because you are trying to read so much.  So it’s a good program for you.  So we’re glad to hear it’s still working for you.

I believe you might be correct.  Other than a 2018 window dressing with a few languages added they seem to have abandoned the product.  I find that
even mobile scanning on my phone has about as good OCR.  I   look for the
OCR component to become a full function of JAWS.

FS has not updated Open book for many years and since OCR is built in to Jaws I don't think Open Book will ever be updated.

I also have OpenBook 9.0, but when I check for updates, it says I’m already using the latest update. Maybe, the auto-updater doesn’t catch the latest version?

It doesn’t.

You have to go to the Freedom Scientific downloads page for Openbook to find it.

Version 9 is indeed the latest, but they did release a minor update in august of 2018.
If you don't have version 9.0.1768.403 it is worth going to the below link to read about it and download it:
