Moderated Setting for Jarte

David Griffith

Could somebody remind me of the setting change needed to make Jarte work properly with Jaws? I think it was David who helpfully provided this a few weeks ago. Now I have JFW 2021 of course Jarte is no longer usable and I have instantly forgotten the setting change to Jaws needed to make it work again.

I can switch back to Jaws 2020 but it would be good to make 2021 compliant as well.

I will remember to save the tip this time.

Hi. From this page:

If Jarte does not recognize your screen reader program then you can force Jarte to switch to screen reader mode by copying the phrase "enable screen reader mode" to the Windows clipboard before starting Jarte. This only needs to be done one time.

Note to JAWS users: Jarte is currently unable to recognize the presence of the JAWS screen reader. If you are using JAWS then you will need to use the method described in the preceeding paragraph to force Jarte into screen reader mode.

As an aside I don't understand why screen reader mode can't be included as an option in the program's menu system to make it a bit easier for users who either want to enable or disable this mode in a way that is a bit more obvious. I will suggest this to the developers but I encourage others to do the same if this is a feature you feel is important.
As another aside there are several other ways to enable screen reader mode, including modifying a line of text in the .ini file but the method described in my previous message is perhaps the simplest.
If NVDA is running Jarte does seem to detect this screen reader and the screen reader mode is usually enabled automatically. I wish a similar arrangement could be made for JAWS users.

the site where Jarte is gotten from says that there is no more support. that is why Jarte Plus (the formerly paid version) is now freely available.
I would imagine that that includes development.

Thanks for this but this was not the  setting change I was looking for.

Jaws 2021 will not interact with the text even with Jarte in screenreader mode. So I cannot for example navigate by word, though I can with Jaws 2020 and NVDA.

From memory it might be something to do with turning advance edit mode off or something like that in the Jaws settings.

I will go and have a look.

Now, I have another question.
How do I get to the view menu so I can make sure the correct view (e.g., print view) is checked.

Just to clarify, does enhance edit mode have to be on or off. I did the same thing, but didn’t get the same results.

Ah, yes, I see the problem. From the Setting Center type "edit" and toggle the setting for enhanced edit mode. That should definitely fix the problem.

Thanks for this but this was not the setting change I was looking for.

Jaws 2021 will not interact with the text even with Jarte in
screenreader mode. So I cannot for example navigate by word, though
I can with Jaws 2020 and NVDA.

From memory it might be something to do with turning advance edit
mode off or something like that in the Jaws settings.

I will go and have a look.

If Jarte does not recognize your screen reader program then you can
force Jarte to switch to screen reader mode by copying the phrase
"enable screen reader mode" to the Windows clipboard before starting
Jarte. This only needs to be done one time.

*Note to JAWS users: *Jarte is currently unable to recognize the
presence of the JAWS screen reader. If you are using JAWS then you
will need to use the method described in the preceeding paragraph to
force Jarte into screen reader mode.

Try quitting Jaws and running NVDA if you have it.  This should force Jarte into Screenreader mode. I hope that this sticks for the next time you use Jarte with Jaws.
