Moderated Accessible EPUB reader for Windows 10

Joe

Does any one know of an accessible Windows 10 EPUB reader? I have some types of these files I would like to access on my PC.

Hi,

If you have the most current version of Microsoft Edge browser it will open an epub file as well as pdf.

There are a number of options.
Q Read - which is a paid application provides epub , PdF and mobi book support. .
There are a number of Text to Speech based readers. Paid and unpaid.. For me the best by far is  the free Speak On which has a range of excellent features for ePub reading in its confusingly  named  Text Publications app.
This has  as  well as text ,  ePub support, including book marking , navigation levels, header and chapter navigation, on the fly control of book reading speed  and   volume and  including a range of other features. You can even create  a “virtual eBook” based on a search term which will pull out all the relevant sections of an ebook which is very useful for academic study. There is also full capacity to export to text to a word processor by simple copy and paste.

No Read will not read Kindle books unless they are converted first by a program like Codex into another format.
There is often a confusion as unprotected mobi file can be read by Kindle Book apps - so mobi can be read by Kindle but Kindle protected books are not mobi books.

I use the portable version of QRead and have it placed in my Google Drive folder so I can have synchronicity across my computers. The only thing QRead really doesn’t do and would be very helpful is to highlight or make notes. This is especially lacking for nonfiction stuff where you’re trying to learn something. If there’s a program that does this, I’d like to know. I believe Kindle supports note taking and highlighting, but I don’t think those features are available when using Jaws. That and at least for me, I don’t want to be locked into the Amazon ecosystem.

All in all, I’m happy with QRead, but the developer’s pretty much abandoned it so if it were to ever brick, that’ll be that then. Not saying it will any time soon, but just something to keep in mind..

I have been consistently, but not for a while, be opening epub files with Adobe Digital Editions. It’s a program I do not like immensely, but has done the job for me. Wonder if this would be the solution.

Hi, Milton. From what I understand, the new Microsoft Edge Chromium will be ending support for ebooks soon except in pdf format. Epub will no longer be supported.

Hi,

If you have the most current version of Microsoft Edge browser it will open an epub file as well as pdf.

Does any one know of an accessible Windows 10 EPUB reader? I have some types of these files I would like to access on my PC.

I want to thank you for the help. I found  Q Read to have a very accessible interface when using Jaws 2020. I wanted to share another app that I found on the Windows 10 store called Thorium Reader. Like Q Read the controls are labeled and key navigation works. The installation from the Store app was accessible and trouble free.
