Moderated Sorting Outlook Messages By Date

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

I just installed the latest Jaws 2020 update on this Windows 10 computer.

I’m using Outlook e-mail in Microsoft 365.

In the list of improvements with this update, I know Jaws will now group messages according to date, which could be quite convenient when sorting through a large folder list view.

Here’s what the update notes say:

“JAWS can now indicate group changes, such as dates or conversations, as you navigate through message lists. For example, if your Outlook view settings
are set to show messages by date and you are navigating a folder containing messages covering multiple days, when you move to the first message in the
new date group, you will hear announcements such as "today," "yesterday," "last week," or "two weeks ago." To turn on this feature, open Quick Settings
(INSERT+V) while in Outlook and select the Announce Group Change in Lists check box.”

I checked the “announce group change” option, but my messages still do not appear to be grouped by date.

Am I missing a step here?

Thanks!

Tom Behler

Hi, Tom. You first have to make sure that your messages are sorted by date in the View Menu. ALT plus V, followed by A, then B, then D as in Date.

Bill:

When I do this, I get into the view menu with alt V, but then the letters a and d don’t take me anywhere.  In other words, Jaws does not respond, and nothing changes.

Bill:

Ok, I did it again.

I hit alt plus a plus b plus d.

Now, at the top of my in-box list view, I have groups by expanded, but then it says date “none” expanded.

If I arrow down through my list view, the messages still are not grouped by date.

I’m obviously still missing something.

Will work on this again tomorrow.

Hi Tom/all,

A quick way of doing that, courtesy of one of our members, is: Within outlook and ribbons unchecked: alt-v, a, b, w. I wanted the reverse, i.e. abolish the grouping announcement, however the command is a toggle I think. So Tom, just give it a chance and I believe this is what you need.

Takis and all:

You are correct in that alt v a b w is a toggle with checks and unchecks the groups option.

However, when I check the groups option, my messages are still not separated by date groupings.  They are arranged chronologically by date, but date groupings still do not show.  At the top of the list view is a message that says “group by expanded flag star date no date expanded.  I’m not quite sure what this means.

Bill:

I just tried this, and now, the message at the top of my inbox list view says “group by expanded date none expanded.

Again, I’m not sure what this means, since my messages are arranged chronologically by date and the dates for each message are spoken.  The messages are just not separated by date, which is supposed to be possible with the latest Jaws 2020 update which I just installed last night.

Thanks Bill. However, it is important for anyone wishing to make the change within our group to uncheck ribbons before proceeding with insert-v and typing “ribbons”. I could not make it before, whereas, once unchecked, all went well.

Hi Tom and all,

Tom, I think the new feature in Jaws 2020 is to announce Groups as you arrow down.  This information comes from the Help menu in Jaws under “What’s New in Jaws”.  First of all as others have said the view to group messages by date must be enabled.  Then press Insert + V to open quick settings.  Type “announce” in the edit box.  Arrow down to the Announce Group Change In Lists item.  Press the spacebar to select the checkbox.  Tab to OK and press enter.  Now when you arrow down through the list when the group changes from Today to Yesterday, Last Week etc.  you will hear the change.

Thanks!
