moderated kindle books conversion to plain text files
Sue J. Ward
Hello. I noticed a post in reading kindle books using jaws don't know if it has been posted to the web training on demand yet, think it is going to be covered this Thursday April 9. I was wondering if you download books from the kindle store and you want to convert them so you can read in notepad what does everyone use since back in 2016 codex worked really well on my machine it does not work anymore, and since we are in the year 2020 what other programs can you use to convert the books from the kindle format to a plain text file? Thanks for any help.

Though it's time-consuming, I have put Kindle into full-page mode (f11) and taken screenshots of each page, then done OCR with JAWS or Omnipage.

Have you considered checking to see if the books you want or have are on ghookshare?

For $50 a year, you can download all the books you want and you can choose Word format, which if you really want as plain text would be rather easy to do.

Hello. Codex continues to work but in order to use it you must use an earlier version of the Kindle for PC software which will not work at all with screen readers. This is a tradeoff I am willing to make as I have no desire to be tethered to my computer in order to read a book and prefer to use my iPhone. However, for several reasons I acknowledge that this is not an ideal situation for some people and that being able to use a Windows computer to read Kindle content may be preferable and even necessary.

Like David, I have no desire whatsoever to read on my pc. Unfortunately, it is an either/or situation with Kindle. Either you read books on the computer, in which case you can use the latest Kindle for Pc which has screen reader features, or you use Codex, which requires the older Kindle for PC version which does not. I choose the latter. I convert Kindle books into .txt or .epub effortlessly, and read them on my braille device or on and iPhone using Voice Dream Reader. Getting this process set up is a little tricky, but once that small hurdle is overcome, Kindle is wonderful.

Well, the deal apparently is that you can't use any version higher than 1.17 with Codex. Old versions are readily available. I use 1.14.243, but apparently 1.16 works too. Here's a page to find them: https://kindle-for-pc.en.uptodown.com/windows/versions

Uninstall the new version before installing an old version. Then go into the Kindle for Pc program and under options, tell the program not to upgrade automatically. When it prompts you, you can just say no to the upgrade. James Scholes has written a very clear manual about using Codex to convert Kindle books. It is here: http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/ After you read this, if you still have questions, a lot of people can answer them. It's a little tricky to get it set up, but once you do the results are well worth it. Dean

Codex by James Scholes Here is a little section from his web site. I encourage any avid readers to follow the link below and read about it and install the utility. A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the installation and configuration of software for the purposes of gaining access to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but it required heavy use of the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an absolute nightmare to troubleshoot if anything went wrong. Which it frequently did. Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to make the process easier and more intuitive, not only for people wanting to read Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it Codex, a word used from the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient, manuscripts in book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that prototype to include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software is now publicly available to download. Please note, that you can only convert books you have purchased and only for your use--you cannot share them with others without violating the copyright laws and cheating the author out of their tiny royalties. In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install Kindle For PC version 1.17, or earlier, but you can get from my web site 1.17 here: http://turner42.com/KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe Here is the link to the Codex Project web site. http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/ This is Richard again, I purchased a Kindle book recently, Beginnings, A Kate Martinelli novella by Laurie R. King, and I couldn't download it and then update Kindle for PC, which was not a good plan. Make sure you get into the Kindle for PC settings and turn off automatic updates. Also, if you haven't used Kindle For PC, the registration screen is not very accessible and you may need sighted assistance to get your account set up. I think I will uninstall and try grabbing an older version even from the link Dean sent. Richard

In order for Codex to successfully convert Kindle books to plain text, you need to install Version: 1.17.1 (44183) of the Kindle for PC program on your computer and set it not to automatically update. If it updates to a later version, Codex will no longer work with Kindle books downloaded with it. I successfully installed version 1.17 after inadvertently updating my Kindle for PC on my Windows 7 computer and was able to successfully convert a Kindle book to ePub with Codex. You can download version 1.17 of Kindle for PC from here: http://turner42.com/KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe Alan Lemly

Why are you not just using the Kindle app for iPhone? It's perfectly accessible and works really well. That's the only way I read Kindle books. Just curious why you'd go through all the extra hoops of converting them to text if they are already accessible with chapter navigation and such in the IOS app.

I don't know about Dean but reading a Kindle book converted to ePub in Voice Dream Reader provides much more functionality and voices than reading it with the Kindle app. I don't read that many Kindle books but this extra functionality makes the few minutes of conversion effort worth it to me. And as they say, different strokes for different folks.

only issue is getting ANY screen reader to properly focus on the input fields for registering!! that ain't easy. I have quite a Kindle collection, but like most I upgraded myself right out of the Codex ability to properly handle the formatting so I can import epub books into my text dream reader on my phone, but I want it back and I want the later books I've downloaded so, my question is; must I have the old Kindle after I register it re-download the books or can it read this format? Or must it re-download and use the files' structure it knows which Codex knows?

Maybe I've answered my own question, still, about registering it is an issue! how to get any screen reader to properly focus, let alone properly get it to use "amazon dot com" not amazon.jp or amazon.com.ca? :) Curtis Delzer HS K 6 V F O Rialto, CA curtis@calweb.com

Actually, so long as you purchased the book, there is no copyright violation to convert it for your own use.

I understand completely and I've only converted a couple of Kindle books because it does take a bit of time and effort to do so. I prefer to get the lion's share of my books from BARD Mobile, Bookshare, or Audible where no conversion is required but I understand that in the UK, you won't have the same access. Alan

-----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of David Goldfield Sent: Wednesday, April 8, 2020 12:21 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: kindle books conversion to plain text files Hello. I understand why you post this reply, but I'd be wary of giving this kind of legal advice, as should Sean. There are copyright issues, but also contractual. On the other hand, the fair use doctrine can be more generous than either of you indicate. It can be helpful to think of how people handle hardcover editions. I am no expert in this area, either. I just want to be sure listers aren't misled. For anyone wishing to learn more, I'm afraid I must refer you to Google or your local friendly copyright lawyer.

If you then share that file with someone who has not purchased the book, you are violating copyright law. If you’re trying to read a Kindle on a iOS or android device you can always use the mobile kindle app. It works fine and you read a whole book. Hello. I really like the info that everyone has submitted and was wondering what does everyone use now since the new kindle for PC version think it is 2.8 you can still read the kindle books on the PC which is kind of okay but still there is got to be a better way to convert the kindle books in to plain text format since you bought the kindle books from Amazon cause after you bought them you should be able to do with them whatever you want to put them in an easier format that works have heard of kindle converter and caliber would that still be workable? I think for me Bookshare is the better deal only 50 dollars a year that is so cheap. That is all I have to say. Thank you.
