Hi. The quickest way to create a new folder is to first open the
folder that you want the folder to be created in. In other words,
if you want to create a subfolder in your Documents folder open
the Documents folder. Next, press shift-ctrl-N. You will be in an
edit field. Type the name of the folder that you want to create,
followed by the enter key. David Goldfield, Blindness Assistive Technology Specialist JAWS Certified, 2019 WWW.DavidGoldfield.org On 2/22/2020 7:24 PM, Shirley Tracy

It is amazing how many different ways there are to do the same thing. I think the control shift n to open a new folder is probably the easiest but I only discovered this after months of going to the view tab on the ribbon and shift tabbing back to "create new folder".

In Windows 10 Alt + 2 is the Windows keyboard shortcut to create a new folder, maybe Control + Shift + N also is, but in official Windows 10 keyboard shortcut reference tables it is Alt + 2.

I think Control+Shift+N has been around since the early days of Windows. I learned it decades ago, with all screen readers. Typical of Windows, there is usually at least two ways to do most things. In fact, until now, I didn’t know about alt+2.

The ribbon is simply a different form of a menu and it's not so difficult if you understand how to navigate them with the arrows, tab and Control + Right r Left arrow to go to different groups in the ribbon.

Then of course there are the keyboard shortcuts which you can remember for things you do often such as Alt + 2 for New Folder or Alt + F followed by I and E which in a protected Excel or Word file is the shortcut for "Enable Editing".

Hi Shirley,
To make a folder in Windows 10, you have to use the applications
key.
First, enter the folder you want to place your new folder in, and press the applications key or shift+f10. Once the menu opens arrow down several times until you reach the new sub menu. pres right arrow, and scroll to new folder and press enter. You can then type the name you want and press enter.
I hope that makes sense.

Dean gave three ways, and Sieghard had given yet another. Alt2 also works.
So Take your pick. The Applications key is the longest way to accomplish this.

Or you can type a PowerShell command to do the same thing. I’m reasonably sure that mkdir works in PowerShell.

Hello! There is an easier way to create a new folder wherever you are in Windows 10. simply press the key command shift + Ctrl + n, and type in the name for the folder, and you are done! Take care David Moore

The reason alt+2 works is that the New Folder command is apparently on the tool bar by default, which fact I had forgotten.

Yep, it certainly does. I guess only weirdos like me (and maybe you too) who like to have a command window open just in case most of the time would use this method, though.
