moderated Jaws 2020 lag with Outlook 365

Cohn, Jonathan

Several sighted people in my office refuse to use Outlook on the desktop claining that it is signifcantly slower than the Web based version. Some of this, is when they are doing searches for converstions where parts of the conversation have been archived. So perhaps it has as much to do with the Exchange / Outlook interface as it does with the fact that a screen reader is running.

Steve Nutt

Bear in mind though that Outlook 2019 is older than Outlook 365.  2019 tends to “lag”? with updates as well.

All the best

Steve

Hi group,

As I await a response from Vispero support, I’m wondering if anyone is experiencing the following:

I have noticed that the lag while using Outlook 365 with Jaws 2020 is even worse than with Jaws 2019. Arrowing through a message list, Jaws simply stops speaking. I can read the title of the window but that’s it. Then after 3-4 seconds I am able to proceed normally through the list. And it takes about 5 seconds before I can type a reply to a message.

A few months ago I asked about this lag while in a Outlook webinar with the Microsoft accessibility group. They acknowledged the problem but that was about all they said. I can hardly wait to see what Vispero’s take is.

Helpful feedback welcome.

Norma

If you have large mail folders, or many of them, reading the Outlook database could become quite disk-intensive. Microsoft Word and Excel won’t be, except when they’re reading or saving a file – and that may happen in a background thread, too.

I’ve noticed that Microsoft Outlook on my laptop is faster and more responsive than on another system that I’ve used. I suspect the main difference is that my SSD is a high-performance NVME drive. The RAM and CPU usage seems to be within reasonable limits on both systems.

I’m using exactly this combination – JAWS, Microsoft Outlook, and OneDrive , with no “lag” or similar issues.

If you’re still using an old-style spinning hard drive rather than a fast SSD, this could explain the problem. Ideally, these days, you should use an NVME solid-state drive. The laptop that I run Windows on has one. If it isn’t the drive, it could be lack of memory. System Information should show how much memory is in use.

Norma,

That would be great if you could call Vispero about this issue.

You’re right, the lag doesn’t only occur when OneDrive is sincing. OneDrive, Outlook and Jaws open together don’t play well at all. Outlook also crashes when I try to search for particular emails. It’s definitely a Jaws issue as it doesn’t occur with NVDA.

And the issue definitely involves OneDrive because when I delete OneDrive and go back to Dropbox, Outlook plays beautifully when open with Jaws and Dropbox.

I hope this makes sense.

Cheers

Zel

Hi Zel,

Yes, I use OneDrive for work and do experience the lag when folders are being synchronized. I think, though, that I am having the lag in Outlook even when no synchronization is occurring. I’ll have to double check that, though.

I recall speaking with a MS disability help desk tech and he said it’s not possible to disable the synchronizing and I understand.

Is there a workaround for this? And, again, I can’t help wonder why the lag is worse with J 2020.

I need to take time to call Vispero about this.

Thanks,

Norma

In order to remedy some of your lagging problems, it would be best to make sure that the Outlook Reading Pane is turned off. When the Reading Pane is on, it causes a small window to the right bottom of the Inbox to show part of the message being highlighted. This can cause Outlook to noticeably lag when moving between the messages.

If you continue to have problems, it would be best if you would contact our Technical Support Department by telephone at (727) 803-8000 during normal business hours, Monday through Friday at 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM EST.

I do notice a delay from the time I press enter to open a message until the time when JAWS begins reading the message. I first thought that this was an Outlook issue but I don't notice this delay as much when performing the same task using NVDA. With the preview pane disabled navigating through messages in the message list is responsive but opening a message is not.

I’m sure there are tools that can collect data on CPU, disk and memory usage to identify any obvious performance problem. Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the relevant Windows tools and techniques.

However, I’ve found the same problem with all the laptops I’ve used in the last few years – Toshiba, Asus and now my HP. My new HP is more responsive but it’s been crashing since I’ve started to use OneDrive, particularly when I search for something in Outlook.

I guess I’ll just have to go back to Dropbox but that won’t help people who are using OneDrive at their workplace and experiencing these problems.

Mor or less the same here, I use OneDrive and Outlook via Office 365 as well as Jaws 2020. There are a few things which could be a bit more responsive in Outlook, but generally going through my inbox, opening messages and so on seem OK.

There are so many factors involved from your hardware to your specific configuration and this certainly doesn’t seem to be an issue which a lot of Jaws users experience. I am not saying some don’t experience it, but it definitely doesn’t seem like even close to any sort of majority do.

Cheers

Wow! That does sound great.

My current laptop is an Intel Core i7 8650U, 8GB DDR4-RAM, 512GB SSD, Radeon RX540 2GB Graphics, 14" Full HD Display. So maybe it’s not powerful enough to handle Outlook, OneDrive and Jaws running at the same time, although this is the most powerful laptop I could find.

My new HP is more responsive but it’s been crashing since I’ve started to use OneDrive, particularly when I search for something in Outlook.

I guess I’ll just have to go back to Dropbox but that won’t help people who are using OneDrive at their workplace and experiencing these problems.

Norma

Mor or less the same here, I use OneDrive and Outlook via Office 365 as well as Jaws 2020. There are a few things which could be a bit more responsive in Outlook, but generally going through my inbox, opening messages and so on seem OK.

There are so many factors involved from your hardware to your specific configuration and this certainly doesn’t seem to be an issue which a lot of Jaws users experience. I am not saying some don’t experience it, but it definitely doesn’t seem like even close to any sort of majority do.

Thanks,

Norma

8GB of RAM might not be enough for good performance. I’m not sure how to find out whether a Windows system is using a lot of swap space and encountering memory pressure. I’m better at Linux administration than I am at Windows administration.

You could try temporarily turning off as many startup programs as you can afford (leaving OneDrive and of course JAWS just for testing purposes).

Hi,
I have an HP computer, and have quite a lag when outlook first starts, but after that, its fine.

I'm debating reinstalling windows 10, because jaws suddenly quits talking.
How can I fix this?

Thanks,

With the preview pane disabled navigating through messages in the message list is responsive but opening a message is not.

Norma

Thanks,

Norma

Hi David, I hear what you’re saying. I’m gonna have to call tech support and let them hear the lag. Here is the main part of their written response to my inquiry regarding this issue, it doesn’t directly address your issue but might prove insightful. Then again it might not. <smile> Best, Norma

I haven’t encountered this issue at all. I’m running JAWS 2020 with the latest Outlook for Office 365 under Windows 10. It might be worth checking whether other people with exactly the same software versions as yours are experiencing the problem. Also, if you think you might be able to upgrade out of it, I would suggest trying to upgrade whatever relevant software you can.

I turned off the reading pane and a couple other things. Seems to help with arrowing through a message list. However, the lag for Jaws responding and my ability to type in the body of a reply message is even worse, probably around 7-8 seconds this time. I do appreciate the reminder about the pane, I wish the settings would just stay but evidently MS doesn’t think that is a priority. Bummer.

Have you tried turning off the preview pane in Outlook?

Subject: Jaws 2020 lag with Outlook 365

Norma
