Using JAWS to Download a Book from a Particular Web Site
Rick Miller
Dear Listers:
Are any of you familiar with Audio Book Ministries, also known as Tape Ministries for the Blind? They have an online accessible library from which their books can be downloaded, but doing it using JAWS is very hard. Their address is:
http://www.audiobookministries.org
Right now the employee they have who is knowledgeable about screen readers and about JAWS is on medical leave and they don’t know when he will be back again. So if any of you are familiar with this particular web site and maybe, by chance, might have downloaded a book from it, would you please be so kind as to access it and figure out how it can be done using JAWS? You don’t have to sign in to do this—at least not for the help I am asking for. Just go to the web page and find the “Online Library Access,” link and hit the Enter key. Then if you just find any book, try to figure out how to get to the page where the book can be downloaded. When you get to the page that has the book description, you’ll see there is no direct link to download the book. There is a “downloads,” link but it will not take you to the “download,” page for the book you wish to download. Instead, it takes you to the page where there are various things that can be downloaded, such as the AudioBook Ministries tax summary and various other things not at all related to the book you wish to download. When you find a book, just tell me how to use JAWS to get to the book’s download page.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Rick, Using Firefox, it is clearly possible to get to the download link after selecting a book. Note that the book download link is above the submit button rather than after it. However, when you follow that download link you get to the “check out” page where it clearly states:
You must be logged in to checkout.
You have to sign up as a patron in order to download anything. The How to become a patron file makes that pretty clear.
I hope that helps, Richard

Hi, Rick I too am a member of Audio Book Ministries (Tape Ministries Northwest) and can not manage to download a book. I have my password and about a year ago the director talked me through the process and I got a book or two. But I have not ever been able to do it on my own. I think the site is accessible, but difficult to navigate and find the right buttons. I suggest you call Audio Books and ask for help. Although the director is currently out on medical leave, as you know, I think there is at least one board member who is blind and uses JAWS. Perhaps you can get help from him/her. And if you do---LET ME KNOW HOW YOU DID IT!
If you contact me off list, we can see if we can figure it out together!
and put Audio Book Ministry in the subject line, please, so I don't delete it. And as I suppose you know, you can request the library to
send the book on a cartridge but I too would prefer to download
it on my own.

Dear Elaine:
Someone subscribed to the list yesterday suggested I go to where the Submit button is then, without hitting the arrow key, arrow up and then hit the Enter key. I haven’t tried it yet, but plan to.
I think it’s truly ridiculous that an organization designed for the blind should make their website so difficult and so inaccessible. I have already done just what you said. In fact, the other day I was practically yelling at them for having their website so inaccessible.

Site I can’t figure it out at all! Obviously, the site is inaccessible. Sharon

Perhaps . . . . you need to just plain use Firefox. Lots of web sites work better on one brouser over another. Sharon

Dear Richard:
Using Internet Explorer, I sign in with My Account. Then I search for the book. When results pop up I go to its page. Then I find right above the Submit button there are a whole bunch of combo boxes such as All Series, All Authors, ALL IDs, etc. I have tried just what you suggested by just arrowing up above the Submit button, but it is not working. Someone asked me what browser I was using, saying that with Firefox it can be done. I am not using Firefox, though. I am using Internet Explorer.
