In my case the c drive holds my root directory. So I just create a shortcut to c: on my desktop.

Windows Key+E is a universal Windows shortcut which works both in Windows 7 and Windows 10 and opens Windows Explorer from anywhere.

Hi Danney,
as others have said, you can press windows key + E to open Windows Explorer with the Computer folder as the current location.

In addition, by default, a Windows Explorer button is the second of the taskbar buttons on the taskbar. If you open windows explorer by pressing this button, then Windows Explorer is opened with the Libraries folder as the current location. If windows explorer is the second of the taskbar buttons, then you can press it using the shortcut Windows Key + 2. (The shortcuts Windows key + number can be used for pressing the taskbar buttons.)

This information, plus lots more is available in this guide to Windows Explorer on Windows 7:

David.
