Which Antiviral Programs Now Work Best with JAWS?

Rick Miller

Dear Listers:

I have decided I don’t like AVG anymore, as AVG now has notices totally graphical and also because AVG is too aggressive with what I have on my computer.  My payment period with AVG expires September 1, so before then I want to start using a new antiviral software, but I want to find one that works best with JAWS.  So that is why I am turning to you all—to find out which antivirus software works best with JAWS.  I will want a program which, after it is through scanning, will automatically shut my computer off.  That’s the one thing I have liked about AVG, but now the only thing.

I know JAWS used to not work well with Norton antivirus software.  Is that still true?

Sincerely,

Rick Miller

I also highly recommend to simply use Windows Defender which is already on your PC and as Randy says it works.

It won't shut off your computer, but to me that is not something I would even want it to do.

Very good. But, what about MalWare, etc.?

I seem to attract such.

Any suggestions as to the easiest to use with JAWS?

Thanks.

I recently asked a similar question elsewhere and Windows Defender was
recommended as an accessible solution that could also be used in conjunction
with MalwareBytes to perform manual scans.

Windows Defender is active by default in Windows 10.

Hello Mike:

Windows Defender is installed during the installation of Windows 7.

Unlike Windows 8 and Windows 10, Windows Defender for Windows 7 does not include a virus scan function.

If you choose to install Microsoft Essentials, it disables Windows Defender and takes over the functions of Windows Defender.

Under Windows 10 and Windows 8 Windows Defender is an antivirus and antimalware tool with realtime scanning.  It is getting antiransomware and several other capabilities integrated into it with the fall update this year.

Under Windows 7 Windows Defender was an antimalware scanner and Microsoft Security Essentials was the antivirus.  Both could be used together.

Microsoft Security Essentials is unnecessary under any version of Windows later than Windows 7.

some time ago when I was trying to fix my friend's laptop, at one point
the MS help desk tech said that Security Essentials was basicly phased
out and replaced by Windows Defender which is a combination of antivirus
and antimalware. it is also been improved over the years it was being
developed. it should work fine in systems running w7, 8/8.1 and 10.

when I allowed the MSA tech to take control of the laptop running Vista,
after about 3 hours, he fixed the issue that checking for updates got
stuck. after he finished, I noticed that there was only Windows Defender
installed as a program for protection. I asked him about also installing
Security Essentials, and told me what I previously posted. this guy was
not the guy that answers the calls, he was the technician (the guy at
tier 2). Vista was also included in the OSs I mentioned, but who is
still running Vista these days...

Mario,

Then avail yourself of the Microsoft website.  None of the formal documentation states anything in conflict with what I've offered.  If you have only Windows Defender running on a Windows 7 or earlier system it does not include an antivirus component.

          Two pertinent threads from answers.microsoft.com:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10/microsoft-security-essentials-for-windows-10/16ec3399-e20e-48a0-bf06-bf1208a864a7

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_start/microsoft-security-essentials/5118072d-2a69-4a89-a416-864cf70ddd88

the second of which contains a direct link to one of quietman7's in-depth posts on BleepingComputer about best practices for security and that again reiterates what I've said and the Microsoft site itself says.

Windows Defender, prior to Windows 8, is not an antivirus product and if you don't have either Microsoft Security Essentials or some third-party antivirus or security suite running the conclusion is obvious.
