JAWS packaging

Hi listers:
I just obtained JAWS through my Voc Rehab office and was a little surprised by the JAWS package.
They used to package with an instructional CD on how to install JAWS (which is still downloadable from the Web site, complete with cassette tone-indexing marks). In the package, I found a bifold sleve containing the Program DVD and the Authorization CD, a couple Braille sheets about the SMA, a large print document (which I assume is the quick reference), and a Braille quick reference booklet. I did not find any instructions on installing JAWS, unless it was in the large print document I couldn’t read. Of course, I am quite familiar with such procedures myself.
I guess, by now, they figure anyone who orders it knows how to install it and doesn’t need any help. Or, are they falling down on the job?
Any thoughts.

There is no way that all JAWS users are going to have the slightest idea how to load the thing. Some will, some will not.

I certainly wouldn't expect cassette tapes any more these days and apart from that installing Jaws is so easy that I really don't see the need for a tutorial. Stick the dVD in the drive and it will start up, you click next a few times and it's done. OK, maybe I am over-simplifying this a bit since you may have to select "Install Jaws" or whatever, the fact is I haven't installed Jaws from DVD in many many years and neither have I used the authorization CD. But certainly it can't be much more difficult than running the downloaded file, if I install on a new computer I always just select to authorize manually and then copy and paste the key into the edit field.

If I had never used a computer before and had no sighted assistance, I’m not sure if I’d know what to do with the package I received.
Seems like I remember a note in Braille on an older cd cover saying to run “d:setup.exe”, but, can’t remember for sure.
I checked the DVD and found nothing but the Basic Training materials. Admittedly, they’re great, but, there’s also some stuff on the getting started recording only downloadable from the training downloads page. A new user wouldn’t know how to get to that at all.
Most folks, though, would have some help the first time, so, I guess they figured it would be enough.

Hi:
On Windows 8 and later, you get a chime sound, with a visual alert which alerts you to the insertion of a CD or DVD. I think you have to click on that to get an option to autorun, but, the CD or DVD doesn’t automatically start. If you’re using a keyboard, you probably will need to know what to type, not just a matter of pressing Enter. In addition, there’s the User Account Control dialog that pops up. Usually, you press alt-y to say yes, but, again, you have to know this.
Another thing in Windows 8 and later. If you set them up using a Microsoft account (which MS recommends), after the first reboot (after the JAWS install is finished), you will need to know how to log back into the system before JAWS will speak. JAWS does not start at the logon screen until after you explicitly tell it to later on.
Right now, best thing is to have a sighted person there for the first little while until you get everything speaking.

I was told that at the age I went blind - finally had to go to a screen reader rather than magnifier in my late 20s - that it was unlikely that I would ever become proficient enough with braille for more than short labels. That’s a good question.
I do know a blind fellow learned braille in his late 30’s or 40’s, later taught himself grade II from a brochure on learning grade II that was thrown in the trash. He never got real fast, but, could follow along in most anything he wanted to read.

jaws narrator has improved a great deal .Narrator is now capable enough to download the jaws installer off the web and run that rather than needing any physical media at all (except perhaps the authorization CD, which I still use rather than keeping that as text somewhere).
