Jaws 17 issues with edit fields in Internet Explorer 11
Russell Solowoniuk
Hi all,
I am running Jaws 17, latest update, Internet Explorer 11, on a Windows 7 machine at work. I am having lots of problems with edit fields in IE, and, for that matter, in Firefox 47. For example, if I copy some text from a PDF document or anywhere else, and paste it into the search edit field in Google, nothing gets pasted. Sometimes, if I go back and copy the text again, and alt tab back to the edit field and paste, it will show up but not all the time. If I press Insert + space, C I will be told that there is no text on the clipboard. This is very frustrating. I also have times when I’ve pasted text into an edit field in IE or Firefox, and when I arrow left and right to try to read the text, letters are repeated 2 or 3 times making it impossible to see if the text I wish there is actually what’s there. I hope this is making sense? I’m finding Jaws 17 to have quite a few issues browsing the web. Are others experiencing anything like this? If so, is there a fix, besides going back to Jaws 16 or 15? :) I plan to write tech support, but wanted to check with you all first. Thanks, Russell |

Yes, JAWS 17 plays havoc with edit fields. As I possibly already stated, when I'm on Facebook and write comments to someone else or on my own page, only the first letter gets posted. Yet, if I go back to JAWS 15, I have no problems at all. I'd like to know why this happens. This may be akin to the issues you're having with EDIT fields on Internet Explorer. Kevin |

I certainly have had that problem with Facebook, and I do not like that at all - about ready to say bye bye to the thing. The way I see it, there's a big world out there. Why should I put myself through something that presents such problems, especially when it once was not as much of one, but pretty much always has been somewhat.

Yes, I’ve had many issues with Facebook as well. I’m surprised at all the problems I’m having with edit fields elsewhere though! It seems like FS continues to add new features that no one really wants, when they should be concentrating on making daily tasks, like typing and editing text in web browser edit fields work as they ought to. I don’t know about anyone else on this list, but, after a couple of days playing around with the “smart navigation” feature, I went into settings centre and turned it off… I find it quite a nuisance. Others may like it, and that’s fine, but I’d sooner FS make edit fields workable again.

It sounds like the same issue. I also have instances where the text I type into an edit field doesn’t get entered. Sometimes if I tab away and then back to the edit field, it will work, but one shouldn’t have to do that.

Have all of you who are having this problem actually reported it to FS as an

issue in JAWS 17? Also, this is why I always keep at least one older version of JAWS on my computer any time I install a newer one: this way, I can exit the latest version and bring up the older one if I encounter a problem that wasn't present in the earlier version. -----Original Message-----

Rgarding JAWS 17, I now refer to an earlier version of JAWS with FaceBook and include some maybe useful commands at the end of this message. I am able to type in comments on FaceBook using JAWS 16 and I E 10 and all the words do appear. Because a super tech helped me with FaceBook, I will put in some of what I learned. ON FaceBook hit "e" to go to the FaceBook search editfield or Simpler hit the "/" key (minus the quotes). You will be almost on top of the editfield for searching. The "/" is listed under keystrokes for (sighted) users of FaceBook and is part of a command "control + /" which did not work as well for me. However, you may find the / actually inside the edit field. Make sure to erase the /, and then type in the search term. Also using semi forms mode makes the edit field easier to use. Then if you hit "q" that takes one to the main region where search results can be found. Hope this helps -----Original Message-----

I haven’t written to FS yet, mainly because I don’t have much faith in FS tech support these days. I thought I’d ask here first, and if no one gave a solution, FS tech support will be my next step. Looks like it’s come to that! Wish me luck! LOL. Russell On Jan 31, 2016, at 10:08 AM, Walt Smith <ka3lists@...> wrote: |
