questions on WordPress.

From what I've been told by a sighted person, word press is not accessible
yet by screen readers. There was a post on how to make it accessible. But,
the poster neglected to mentioned that you need sight to set it up
originally.

1. In most themes you have to modify the theme files it will probably be
certain files you need to modify though. I don't know how to do this since i
lack experience with any type of coding except html. Also check out the
themes wordpress has to offer. Some of them will let you customize the text
once installed.2. Categories are what you would clasify the blog articles
you write under eg. Lawsuits, technology, rants etc. 3. I know there's a way
to code them in, but i don't know how. There is also a widgit that will let
you customize menus from your categories. Google and the wordpress forums
should be able to provide you with more information.

I haven't done it on a self-hosted server, but i know of blind people who have done it successfully and with a screen reader. I have however, sat up a blog on wordpress.com and it was pretty easy to set up with a screenreader, but it's been a while since i did that last. I actually much prefer self-hosted (wordpress.org) over hosted (wordpress.com) because there's more that you can do with self-hosted than with the hosted version accessibility wise if you know how to code or how to set things up.

My question is, are you posting or setting up a website when you are on
WordPress? This is not to be argumentative, just to get to the bottom of
things. Supposedly it is accessible for posting but, at the moment, not for
using to set up websites. Please feel free to chime in on this.

I've done both and both self hosted and hosted and it's completely accessible. The only problem is if you're on hosted and you mess up attag you can't delete the tag unless they've fixed that recently. Other than that it's fine. If you are setting up a website you do need to turn off the visual editor though because that can mess with your screenreader and i always turn off the toolbar thing when setting up a site because it annoys me.

Hello Folks,

I agree it
s accessible. but I think it's pretty more cool if those with more
experience can share insightful method they use in doing it. I have
set up my website with wordpress but trust me, it's lot of trial and
error not a straight forward method.
If anyone can put up an archive to teach others on this, it will be very good.

Regard.

I tinkered with setting up a website at one point just to learn some basic fundamental things. I did find in using word press, that depending on which theme won uses it can make a difference in terms of accessibility.

My question is, are you posting or setting up a website when you are on
WordPress? This is not to be argumentative, just to get to the bottom of
things. Supposedly it is accessible for posting but, at the moment, not for
using to set up websites. Please feel free to chime in on this.

Hi!

I did find this WP plug-in which is supposed to make the admin interface
more accessible. I have zero personal experience with it, or WP for that
matter.

Guys! I was wrong the tag you should search for if you want a theme that is already made to work with screenreaders and such is "accessibility-ready" not #a11y sorry for any confusion. There's not really a lot of them and less they added to that recently.

Far from it, I code with Wordpress all the time and I am totally blind. See
http://www.comproom.co.uk for an example of a commercial web site that I
built myself. Also see http://www.thebrownsplace.inf o and
http://www.jaysworldofmusic.com for two of my clients.

The only thing difficult for a total, is to trim and crop pictures to the
right size and shape for the web site. I have a support worker to do that
for me though, and we can also offer that service.

If interested, please don't hesitate to contact me off list. We can't help
you for free, but we can do all this for you, including building your web
site.

All the best

Steve

Hi,

You can also turn off the visual editor on a per user basis, so if you have
a sighted person helping you, he or she can still have the visual editor
turned on.

All the best

I've done both and both self hosted and hosted and it's completely
accessible. The only problem is if you're on hosted and you mess up attag
you can't delete the tag unless they've fixed that recently. Other than
that it's fine. If you are setting up a website you do need to turn off the
visual editor though because that can mess with your screenreader and i
always turn off the toolbar thing when setting up a site because it annoys
me.
