Problem selecting text from the screen, OCR won't work?

Shannon

Good morning,

I have a report opened to the display in the accounting program. It opens in another window.

I want to select the text to paste it in word.

I can read the report with the invisible curser but not with the mouse, or pc curser.

I don’t know if or how the invisible curser selects text. I couldn’t get anything to paste into word.

I then thought ok I’ll try OCR but the command for screen only says “ Started, finished, JAWS”

I get the same with trying the window to OCR. There is nothing to read.

What could I be doing wrong?

Does OCR care which curser is active?

Yes, I know I could run this report as a pdf and save it somewhere and then open it in Adobi reader to select the text but I thought just steeling it from the screen would be quicker and less messy.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Shannon

You can try virtualizing the screen with JawsKey + alt +W and see if you get usable results.

Shannon,

First after you use convenient OCR with the Insert+Spacebar, O, then w...after it says finished and JAWS, have you tried using the JAWS cursor to see if anything was recognized? Sometimes not, depending on the program.

Here's a way-out idea...Using your invisible cursor, read line-by-line down the area of numbers you want to copy. Then without doing much else with reading, press Insert+Spacebar followed by H to get into the JAWS speech history. You can arrow up the list of what JAWS said, and when you reach the first line of numbers, start the highlighting process with spacebar+downarrow, until you have all the numbers of interest selected. Ctrl+C to copy, and Escape out of the JAWS speech history. Paste into your document-processing program of choice.

Thank you for that!  It worked.

I didn’t know that was a thing?

What exactly did I do and where can I use that trick?

It seemed to open in another window?

Thanks for the tip

Dave,

Thanks for that work around too!

The Jaws/mouse could read that OCR attempt. So is that the way you read the convenient OCR Screen with the mouse?

And that  is the first time I have ever tried the history command. I had asked before what good that was and you showed me why I might think it is a good tool.

Thanks

Did you try the temporary placemarker, control+Windows+k then at the end insert+space bar then m, then control+c to copy?

No idea if that would work.

Shannon,

I'm pretty sure you can highlight text from the OCR result and the mouse cursor, and also copy it. Give it a shot.

It takes the screen and puts it in a buffer where you can move around and read it as needed.  I can’t think of a better way of putting it.  I use it a lot.  When ever I can’t read or nabigate a screen I will try to virtualize it so I can review and most often copy information that I can not otherwise get access to.

Its very handy.

Yes. Thanks for reminding me of that command. I've used it, but too rarely, in the past.

I agree with Tom, virtualizing the screen is a great tool, I use it in my accounting program, Sage 50,  quite a bit as well if I want to copy certain information. One example where I use it is for one of my suppliers where I order a lot and where I usually send an email with a list of invoices, their invoice and due dates and amounts and the total I need to pay. I go ahead in Sage 50 and tab through all the invoices I need to pay, then process the payment. Now I go and do a payment lookup which shows me a table of only the invoices I paid. Here I use the screen virtualization feature, copy that table and paste it into Notepad. In Notepad I add headings like Invoice Number, Invoice Date, Due Date and Amount and I separate each of these with a tab. I then put the information underneath in separate rows, again each piece is separated by a tab. When I am done I copy this entire Notepad page and paste it into Excel, putting the tabs causes the information to correctly get split up into columns, I can then add the total at the bottom. Once it’s done I again copy this Excel sheet by highlighting all the rows and columsn with data and I paste it into my email in Outlook where it correctly appears formatted as a table.

This sounds complicated and while it involves a few steps, it actually doesn’t take me long at all to do this.

Regards,

Sieghard
