running a dos program

Jed Barton

Hey guys,

OK, this may seem like i'm going back to the dark ages, and OK, yeah
it sure is. I have to program some radios, and typical motorola they
actually have some dos software. Is there any sort of program that
can give me a dos prommpt so i can run the software? If not, that's
totally ok. Figured i would ask, if jaws 18 would even run with such
a program.

Any version of Windows including Windows 10 will give you a command prompt, just type "cmd" into the run command.

I don't know just how close to this you can get with Windows now days, but are you able to do anything with the command prompt? Might it be possible to load a version of DOS from there?

Have a look at any book or tutorial on Microsoft PowerShell.

Yes: but you need to be something of an old style dos operator. There are many commands still available for assisting with system maintenance but documentation as to what those commands are and what they do is hard to find.

I can recall having a persistent Outlook error which was solved by running a utility only available from the command prompt.

I suspect that JFW will behave similarly to Window-Eyes - that is - no form of review or customisation. You command - and you get!

Vaughan.

And note that if the programs are actually DOS based (that is 16-bit
programs) and you are running a 64-bit version of windows you are
going to have to jump through some major hoops. With 64-bit windows
you can not run 16-bit programs natively, you have to use a 32-bit
virtual machine.

cmd.exe looks a lot like DOS but it is most definitely _not_ DOS.

Umm, you only need an admin cmd prompt if you intend to run admin-only
actions. There are plenty of things you can do with a normal-user
prompt.

Hi Sieghard meant to say Jed not yourself
Apologies.

I found out years ago that some DOS programs don't run well in a DOS window, so I can't say whether or not the Motorola software will work. However, as indicated, full command capability remains. I still use it when I want something quick and easy.

Ted
