On Line Banking Update
Shannon
Thanks for the update, So if that is not reported by JAWS how do you know that it is there without another pair of eyes? Are you still left on your own to wait? Or did this lesson teach you how to find the account choice area so that doesn’t happen and be able to complete the transaction? Thanks Shannon

Hello Shannon, I wrote to the help line on the site, first I received an instruction to insure I pressed the confirmation button. Then I replied that it was not coming up and that I was using a screen reader. I was told that the issue was probably particular to my software, and was left to my own devices, so I wrote to the technical help address on the site, and during our email exchange I offered to come into the branch laptop in tow. Actually all I really needed was sighted assistance to report the account selection box that JAWS did not. The best advice I could give after this is to use the insert control and L for list, T for table, B for button etc., And sadly, sighted assistance when you are stuck. Cheers Kevin.

Hello All, Problem solved; when I pressed the “Pay Bills” button a little box came up asking if it was to come from checking or savings, which JAWS did not recognize. Cheers Kevin

Nothing wrong with asking for help from the sighted community from time to time. When applying to get a guide dog, you need character references. One of mine said the one sense that she would be terrified of losing is her sight. She could live with being deaf but, loosing her sight would be terrifying. What’s my point? Some sighted are more then willing to help. You just must be careful it is not for the wrong reasons, and that, is a Pandora’s box which this is not the forum for.

Hello Shannon, I do not need to find that box in order to complete a transaction now, as it is set to checking, and draws the funds from there automatically. I will get a sighted friend to check for me at the next opportunity. Cheers Kevin.

Hi Sieghard, I am now back at the unit with JAWS on it. Smile I would say on a scale of 1 to 10, I fall at maybe 1.5? Haha I am slowly trying to get used to the way JAWS does stuff. I have to admit that I still fall back on WE for a lot of things because it is just faster to get things done. I try to use JAWS to do things I know how to do. I find myself having to turn WE back on to get things finished.
I do know the C for combo box, H heading, A for radio button (but I am used to that function being R) I don’t understand the Regions? That is now what R is for. The Touch Curser seems to be pretty cool but, I don’t understand it either. It doesn’t seem to find the things I know are there either. I don’t seem to have any luck using the JAWS find command at all. It never finds things I know are on the screen. I don’t have much luck using the JAWS curser i.e. mouse to find things I know are there. There are tons of things about JAWS that I don’t know. I am slowly plugging away at the manual when I find a problem and think “there is a something for this” Like just now… I had some spelling errors in my message. WE has a handy little thing where you can jump to the next and prior spelling errors. Alt and semicolon for prior and alt apostrophe for next. I find it very handy I wonder If JAWS has a feature like this?

Hi Shannon,
I don’t want to assume the level of Jaws knowledge you have for navigating websites, but on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is super expert, where would you rate your knowledge of the tools and features Jaws offers? By those I mean things like using quick nav keys like c, b,t, l, r and so on as well as features like Jaws Find, setting bookmarks, making sure you correctly activate mouseOver links etc. I am a Scotia Bank customer in Canada and also use the CIBC website as I have a Visa from them and while of course this issue Kevin describes may very well be impossible for Jaws to deal with, I have certainly helped people with problems which ended up being quite workable form somebody who really knows to get the most out of Jaws I am also curious whether now that Kevin got an explanation of the problem if he can now get Jaws to do what is necessary without sighted help. I have numerous times needed sighted help to explain to me what was going on before I could deal with it using Jaws by myself.

Radio buttons or other virtual elements have to be present in an app. Otherwise, you get the Find command, as stated. If you hear the phrase “virtual HTML features,” you’re on the right track. You can scroll down a list of 19 such features, including radio buttons.

Whoo Hoo! Kevin, I am glad that now we know how to get to that particular control. You are going to find them all over the place. You will find that is a very popular thing. Even when it would be more expedient to use a plane old edit box. IMO I find it tedious to have a combo box or pull down for the state field in an address form. I can type MO faster than using a pull down. Happy bill paying!! Shannon

Radio buttons or other virtual elements have to be present in an app. Otherwise, you get the Find command, as stated. If you hear the phrase “virtual HTML features,” you’re on the right track. You can scroll down a list of 19 such features, including radio buttons.

Hi Ted,
Can you explain your Jaws+F3 and R command? Jaws Key+F3 is “find next” and I can’t see any connection to radio buttons. Usually a simple “r” is sufficient to move to a radio button.

Radio buttons are quickly accessible, when available, with JAWS-F3, followed by the letter R. They get quite a workout over here.

Hi, does anyone know of
how to take advantage of the deposit feature on the I phone within a banking
app?
It seems that you need to align the camera just right to capture
the check. Also, it seems that you need to shut off voice over so to make
it work. I asked the credit union to see if it could be a better way but,
they said that they could do it for me.....not the answer I am looking

Hi Shannon,
You are correct that the key used to find radio buttons in JAWS is "A". However, if you press insert and F3, you will get a list of controls that you can arrow through to choose different controls. If you are in this list and press "R", it will take you to the radio buttons entry in the list since it begins with "R". Once that choice is highlighted, if you press enter, you will get a list of all the radio buttons. I hope that makes some sense.
Thanks Shannon

Hi Shannon,
I don’t want to assume the level of Jaws knowledge you have for navigating websites, but on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is super expert, where would you rate your knowledge of the tools and features Jaws offers?
Regards, Sieghard

However, if you press insert and F3, you will get a list of controls that you can arrow through to choose different controls. If you are in this list and press "R", it will take you to the radio buttons entry in the list since it begins with "R". Once that choice is highlighted, if you press enter, you will get a list of all the radio buttons. I hope that makes some sense. There are a number of stands out there, the Standscan, the Fopydia or whatever it’s called, the Giraffe… You may need a bit of help to do it the first time and to maybe set up some sort of guide for placing the cheque, but I’m sure it could be done reliably with one of these stands and maybe also with lots of practice free hand. I guess I have to give it a try some time, maybe I’ll write a cheque to myself and try it.

Hi, does anyone know of how to take advantage of the deposit feature on the I phone within a banking app? It seems that you need to align the camera just right to capture the check. Also, it seems that you need to shut off voice over so to make it work. I asked the credit union to see if it could be a better way but, they said that they could do it for me.....not the answer I am looking for. Thank you for any help here. Andy and Shubert

No, Insert+F3 brings up a list of all HTML elements, there are a total of 20 items in this list, you can use first letter navigation to go to a particular list like “l” will take you to the links list, press it again or down arrow and you get to the list items list, again or down arrow and you get to the lists list. “r” will go first to the radio buttons list and if you press it a second time it will go to the Regions list. Selecting the links list is the same as pressing Insert+F7, it’s just that if you don’t remember the shortcut keys like Insert+F5 for a list of forms fields, Insert+F6 for a list of headings and Insert+F7 for links, you can just remember this one shortcut, Insert+F3 and access all possible lists from there just as you can access all settings items with Insert+F2 instead of having to remember that Insert+6 is for the Settings Centre, Insert+7 is for the Window Classes, Insert+8 is for the keyboard manager etc.

Regards, Sieghard

Hi Kevin, I've been watching the saga. I'm glad you figured out the problem, but how did you solve it? I have issues finding controlthings on my banking site as well. Just wondering what the tricks and tips are. Thanks Shannon
Hello All, Problem solved; when I pressed the “Pay Bills” button a little box came up asking if it was to come from checking or savings, which JAWS did not recognize. Cheers Kevin
