Refurbished Tablets
Elise Berkley
Hello, everyone. I am a little green in this area. I was wondering what everyone thinks about purchasing refurbished tablets from somewhere like, say Amazon. I need a tablet for school just to take notes. Then, when I get home, I copy my note files over to my laptop and do the real work there. Thanks for your opinions. Elise |

Buying a refurbished tablet in general, is a perfectly reasonable option Whether you’ll be able to maximize its use for this method... Since this is a Jaws list, I can only assume that you’re looking for something Windows based? I’ve seen sales for refurbished Surface tablets in the range of $350 to $500, but at that price, a low end laptop or refurbished laptop may end up giving you more bang for your buck. I know Dell and other companies used to make affordable Windows tablets, but I haven’t kept up to date on that market as I haven’t had the need for one. With this sort of purchase, you’re going to want to pay attention to specs. The last thing you’ll want is to be fighting with a sluggish machine while at the same time trying to take notes or whatever.

I’ve seen Android based tablets with 16 gigs go for as little as $39.00 on Amazon. But I tried in vane to learn the Talk Back and the whole blind droid thing. I’m no dummy, but to heck with that Android fill in the blank. No offense to the Android crowd, but it was so easy, to pick up an IPhone and roll right out of the box! Just my 1.27 cents worth from an ordinary average blind guy! LOL!

If you ever want some help over the phone, I can tell you and possibly teach you about everything I’ve learned. Because that’s what it’s all about. “When a man helps another man cross a river, he too, crosses that same river” Give me a call some time on my home number, that way I can work my IPhone easily enough too Mike: 239-540-7431.
Or give me a call on my IPhone and we can set up a date and time: 239-565-5845.

I have had success with refurbished electronics and think it is a very cost effective option. Best Buy also has a refurbished section, and you might also consider asking around amongst friends and family for under used equipment you can have or borrow. Do you have a mobile plan of some kind? I just recently started using an ipad mini when one came for free with my new phone plan. I had no idea how useful it can be. Something like this might be a low cost option for you. If you have a smart phone, you might consider using it to take notes on. I have done this before and then sent the notes to my laptop to work from. You can email and text to your email account that you check with your phone, or use one of the cloud sharing options like drop box. I hope you find a method that works well for you. I think Android is definitely catching up and many consider it a very viable alternative. Check out some of the Podcasts from James Oats on Cool Blind Tech, he bought a Google Pixel phone and seems quite impressed with it. Of course that is also an expensive high-end phone so if I were to buy one I would have pretty high expectations which I would not have if I bought a $39 or even $99 Android tablet.
Regards, Sieghard

Do you use Braille at all? If so, you should look into a BrailleNote Touch, yes, I know it's expensive, but it has the power to do all of that plus much more.

All of the current braille note takers are really expensive. I am excited about some of the new products being revealed with super affordable price tags on braille displays. Even a $500 tablet that has its own Braille display.

I prefer to use a real tablet, either android or iPad, in this case an iPad, and get one of those great keyboard cases like the clamcase pro cases, and if you need braille get a braille display like the baum vario ultra 20, etc etc. The 5500$$$ price tag on the note takers from humanware and hims, and anyone else is way Too much money these days. -----Original Message-----

What about a Windows 10 computer? There's actually a braille Windows 10 computer that runs Jaws, it's not out yet, but I'm guessing, it's only $3,000, which isn't too bad, better than the Touch. The specs are much better too.

Wait, it is not available on the commercial market yet. There was a demo model at one of the big tech shows recently. The Orbit braille display will be available this Spring and it is priced around $500 and will work on tablets just like the much more expensive models we can choose from now.
