Navigating tables in Chrome

John Doering

Hello:

Any ideas on how to better navigate items in tables on Chrome web sites.

Currently, arrowing up or down moves through each item in a row until the end of a row then goes to the next row.  If the table is large, this can take a good bit of time.

Tried using the control + windows key + j command to jump to the row and column coordinates, but does not seem to work in these tables.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried using the JAWS table navigation commands.  Insert plus space followed by the letter T for table.  You have to be in the table before you use the keystroke.  Then you can use the up and down arrow keys to navigate by row, and left and right arrow keys to move through the different columns.

If a table reads as you describe it is simply not properly designed/marked up. I have many websites where arrowing reads one cell of a table at a time, but if whoever designed the website treats one entire row as one cell then there isn’t anything that can be done about it except to try and contact the website administrator and ask if this can be fixed. It’s sort of like having headings and other design elements, if a website is designed without them it is not the fault of any screenreader.

You can always turn on Smart Navigation and set it to “Controls and Tables”.

That still won’t do anything if a table on a website is not marked up properly. It’s like the following example, try to navigate the below with table navigation:

Description        Quantity              Price      Total

Test item 1         2             $10.00  $20.00

Test item 2         1             $50.00  $50.00

Test item 3         5             $5.00    $25.00

Now try this one:

Description

Quantity

Price

Total

Test item 1

2

$10.00

$20.00

Test item 2

1

$50.00

$50.00

Test item 3

5

$5.00

$25.00

The second table was properly done as a table, the other one was just typed and while visually it lines up and all that, it is not a table and if a table on a website is not correctly designed it just won’t read.

Sieghard
