JAWS Becomes Sluggish When Writing Emails in Outlook
Randy Barnett
Hi Rick it’s kind of counterintuitive in this situation. The graphics acceleration is supposed to offload the graphics rendering to your video card that’s freeing up CPU cycles for your other programs. But for some reason with jaws it seems to do the opposite and slows things down. And yes it’s strictly for sighted people and graphics it doesn’t help us at all in fact as you’ve noticed it makes things worse at times. Although this is strange just like I said it’s actually offloading CPU load to the graphics card and sharing that processing load with the graphics processor.

Yes, there were times when the auto-complete list didn't read in Jaws and apparently some people still experience this, but it's working for me and many others. There are occasionally other forces at play when it comes to issues in a particular application. Is Outlook perfect, far from it, but I would have the same problem if somebody claimed this characteristic for Thunderbird.

Thunderbird is a free open source email client that is accessible and works well. Way easier to use than outlook in my limited experiecne with outlook. I have tried Outlook several times but I always go back to Thunderbird. A lot of blind people prefer it and use outlook for work.

I hope Randy won't take this the wrong way, I don't mean any offense, but he is obviously somewhat biased towards it and suggested just a few days ago that if you use Thunderbird you have no more issues. But I also seem to remember him posting yesterday that he is having some issues with it which would proof my belief that no matter what you use there will always be issues, if there weren't everybody would use it and there would be no reason for groups like this one. At one point my I3 system did what you described and I don't know what happened, but without me doing anything this is for the most part not a problem any more. That particular system is still not nearly as snappy as my other systems which are I5 and I7, but I can understand that it is certainly annoying.

I can't thank you enough for your valuable tips on this topic! Jaws has been bugging me for years with various laptops I've bought in that time. Your tips have resolved my problems to a great extent although Outlook still crashes at times when I use it with Jaws. The answer for me was to ' Disable hardware graphics acceleration'. I find this is a Jaws issue. NVDA works ok with Outlook without having to disable hardware graphics acceleration. Like Rick, I use Outlook because it's the program used for emails in the corporate sphere. It also has the calendar which I find very useful. Cheers Zel

The accelerator box is checked to disable it... I have done that and checked the other that was mentioned. No problems so far...

Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box checked Play animated GIFs check box not checked is just how I now have it set... again, it seems to be doing better and only time will tell. Have a good night, Rick

Alt + G will toggle graphics acceleration once you are on Advanced, you can entirely do it by keyboard shortcut:
