"Prompt Create" function of JAWS
Hello All, I am about to begin working with a client at her work site where JAWS will be used on top of a custom software interface, though I believe the interface is web-based. I have been told by someone who had worked very briefly with this system that a number of edit fields work just as you'd expect and JAWS announces the alt text or label text that goes with them. Others, however, get a generic announcement that you're in an edit box. I have been told that there is a "prompt create" function in JAWS which will allow you to create the prompt that JAWS speaks for an unlabeled edit box whenever you land in it after assigning the prompt. I have not ever seen this nor recall documentation for same. Is anyone familiar with this function and/or what piece of JAWS documentation I should review to learn more about it?

Hi Brian,
It shows up in the JAWS manager screen JAWS key +F2 when you’re in a dialog box. It is defined in the search for JAWS commands screen jaws key+ space+ J. it also can be used anywhere the user is prompted to enter information. It seems to me that it works like an alt tag for unclear request on a control. its’ keystroke is ctrl jaws key tab.

Hey again,
I tried it when I was composing this email. I used the command and change the subject line to now say on my machine “none of your business” and it works.

HtH, Thank you. Since the system in question isn't "dynamic" in terms of what's presented as you traverse input screens (though you can and do change the possible visitation order) this technique should work well for "filling in the blanks." I am eternally grateful for the pointer and to know the command can also be used to re-label an existing edit box.

One other thing, I just discovered, if you don’t put in a tutor message it doesn’t announce the change the next time you come across it. I used the same words twice; but, to each his own.

I definitely want to be certain that each and every time one visits a control where a prompt has been created that it will always be repeated on each subsequent visitation.
