Web page configuration question
Maria Campbell
This question is more blind-related than JAWS-related.
My web pages seem to open in very small print and in a very small screen configuration, making it hard for hubby to help me when I need his eyes for any assistance from time to time. How do I get web pages to open at maximum screen size and still keep JAWS working? Thanks to anyone who may have understood my problem. -- Sunny Day Maria Campbell lucky1@... Try hitting Alt plus spacebar and then the letter x.

That doesn't work. It says maximize unavailable.

Maria, May I ask what web browser you are using? No matter which one you're using generally CTRL+Num Pad Plus will increase the size/magnification of a web page being displayed and CTRL+Num Pad Minus will decrease it. I have seen many people accidentally reduce the magnification on a webpage or webpages they visit frequently and if they're blind or vision-impaired and not literally looking at those pages it makes no difference and, of course, they have no way of knowing it's even occurred. In addition, most browsers can and do remember how you set your magnification for any web page you visit and when you visit it again it immediately applies those settings. Most browsers also support a way of doing an instant "jump to 100%," that is, normal size on a given web page, but how that's done varies. If you're in a pinch I suggest that your sighted helper try CTRL+Num Pad Plus to bump up the size that the page is displayed in. Each hit takes it a little bit larger. Brian |

Thanks but is there a way to just get the size to stay the same for each web page or does it have to be changed each time?

I prefer IE, but son and hubby like Firefox. On 12/21/2015 12:25 PM, Brian Vogel wrote:

I'm not sure then. I've never encountered that problem.

Maria, The default, unless you as an end user change it for a specific web page, is for the browser to present the page at 100%. Now, if you're using something like a screen magnifier that layers over top of everything, but should make everything larger. I have never seen a web browser present *every* page consistently at less than 100%. If you are seeing this happen consistently in, say, IE then I'd need to research if there is some global setting of which I've been unaware that instructs the browser to present all web pages at some pre-determined percentage of "natural" size. From what I can get from what you've written it sounds like something's causing all your webpages in a given browser to be presented in reduced size, and that is quite unusual. If it's possible to get someone to help you to get a screen capture of precisely what you're seeing (which is done with ALT+PrtSc), paste it into MS-Paint or some other image processing software, save it, and post it that would be immensely helpful to me. Maria, MS-Paint has been included with every version of Windows since Windows made its debut. So, unless you have had someone do some really odd modifications to your system, it's still there and ready to be called upon. That's what I use to paste all my screen captures in to and then save them for later mailing, posting, etc. I'm not sure which "that" you're referring to in your "that doesn't work, either," response. Remember, too, that JAWS can and does occasionally hijack certain Windows or program keyboard commands. It may be necessary to exit JAWS temporarily to determine whether it's what's causing any keyboard command that should typically work to not work. Brian |

I mean that neither the alt plus space bar nor the f 11 work to increase screen size on web pages.

The control plus the num pad plus works fine but it means turning my numlock on then off again for JAWS to work. But that's OK too. On 12/21/2015 12:58 PM, Brian Vogel wrote:

Hi Maria,
When you get the message that Maximize is
unavailable, this means that the screen is already maximized. Also, if you
press, F11, this puts the screen in Full Screen mode, & this mode will make
the menues unavailable but, pressing, F11, again should turn the Full Screen
mode off.
Take care. Mike ----- Original Message -----

Not on my laptop for whatever reason, as hubby is always complaining about the small size of text and screen on web pages.

Maybe you simply need a larger screen so that your hubby can read it more easily. How large is your laptop screen?

It's a 15 inch screen, but when I do what Brian said to do with the control plus numpad plus all is well for him then.

Maria, What version of Windows are you running? Is this problem limited to IE or do you have the same size issues with the other browsers as well? I wish I could help more, but I am truly having trouble envisioning just precisely what is occurring here, hence the request for screen shots. Also, what is the make and model of your laptop? BTW, if you've got a full sized keyboard on your laptop you should not need to turn NumLock on (or off) in order to access the plus, minus, asterisk (times sign), slash (divide sign) or Enter key on the number pad. Since these keys don't have dual function on any machine I've ever seen they produce their respective characters independent of the state of the Num Lock key. Try it again just to verify, but I tried it here (sans JAWS, mind you) and the state of the Num Lock key has no effect on those keys that don't do double duty on the number pad. Brian |

Brian, thanks for your assistance. I now know what to do in the future, if the problem rears its ugly head. I don't know why this is happening, but just now things on the Net seem to be working as they should, after my son messed around with some settings.

I'm using an old Toshiba laptop that is over five years old. It does have a full keyboard but I still use an external keyboard for easier maneuvering. It's running W 7. Really, I appreciate the help, but don't want to be a pain. I've got my work-around, and sometimes that the best thing, as long as it works, when there's a mystery.
