Is Edge usable as a browser with JAWS?
Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. <kramlinger.keith@...>
Hi,
I’m new to Windows 10, and currently using Google Chrome as my default browser, which is working well.
I haven’t heard mention recently about usability of Edge browser with JAWS, so I’m guessing it’s still is not a viable option, but wanted to check by inquiring here.
Curious to learn of it’s current status.
Thanks in advance, Keith |

If you use Jaws 2019 (Jaws 2018 also works) Edge is very useable and I suggest you simply give it a try. I still prefer Chrome because there are a few things which are still not supported in Edge such as auto forms mode for example and it's too verbose for me.

It does work fine for the newest level of JAWS, JAWS 2019. It depends on the level of JAWS you are currently running.

Hi, Keith. I use Edge for some things like Internet radio streaming, but it has some nasty querks, like displaying pages in tabular form, even when the page doesn’t display as a table in other browsers.

Hi all! Edge works so much better with Narrator. You can do everything with Edge using Narrator instead of JAWS. David Moore

Maybe, the problem for me is that I am about 26 times faster with Chrome and Jaws than I would be with Edge and Narrator. Hence I use Chrome.

I use Chrome too, for the most part. I’ve tried edge and it does seem to work with both JAWS and NVDA. There are some oddities with JAWS, for example the speech announces entering and exiting various elementswhen navigation keys are used.
However, my experience with Edge is not at all extensive. I don’t yet need it for professional purposes (I work on accessibility research and standards activities, for which Chrome and Firefox are enough). I also use Chrome and safari on the Mac regularly, so it isn’t as though I’m lacking options in the browser department.
Edge is well worth watching. Microsoft developers have been improving its accessibility support in impressive ways, including ARIA and HTML standards.

Until they make access to the browser's own controls less tabby, I'll be avoiding edge. I have enough problems without a poor interface.

One thing I like about edge is that it tells you when page is complete and loading. I also like how the notification is so clear. It’ll say something like press alt+N, for this notification. It says: XYZ XYZ XYZ. I like this a lot.

Edge is our default Browser here at work. It’s usable, but several of the quick nav keys don’t work, nor do placemarkers. I can use if for some things, but will often go to IE or Chrome. IN particular, I do not like the way Edge presents Favorites. I cannot use first letter navigation, so it feels more tedious than in IE.
