Navigating Favorites With Chrome
Dave Mitchell
Hi, What is the most efficient way to quickly access the imported Internet Favorites with Chrome and Windows 10 and JAWS 2018? I have worked with Chrome a little to get to my saved Website links but I cannot find any keystrokes as simple as with I E 11 so will appreciate some guidance from more experience users. Thanks, Mitch

In what browser is Alt+F followed by B supposed to woprk?
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
It doesn't do anything in Chrome, the Alt key alone brings up the menu, there is no "File" menu and for me Alt+f In Chrome does nothing. As far as I am concerned there simply are no quick and easy shortcuts in Chrome to select a certain bookmark.

This is one of the main reasons that's holding me back from adopting Chrome as my main browser or using it more often than now.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
In Firefox, it's a super quick and easy alt plus B to the bookmarks menu and first letter navigation to whatever folder or bookmark I want. Having a Firefox account also makes it super easy to keep everything synchronized across machines. I tried importing my Firefox bookmarks into Chrome and while they were uploaded, they're now buried in the imported bookmarks subfolder of the subfolder of the Chrome menu bar. I mean come on? How practical is that? I know there's the view all bookmarks command in Chrome, but again, that's not really a practical solution. Sometimes, simplicity is best. A while back, I inquired of a way to keep bookmarks synchronized across browsers, but didn't really get an answer. The ideal set up would be to have bookmarks available across both Chrome and Firefox and maintain synchronicity, but alas. I believe there's an add-on called EverSync that does this, but as with many things, how's the accessibility and user experience. Also, I tink Everysinc is a paid service. I've got so many subscriptions to this and that service that it begins to add up. I don't know if I want to shell out another $30 or $40 a year for this convenience. So anyway, if there's in fact a quick and easy way to access Chrome bookmarks or if there's an add-on that does this, I'm all ears. Cristóbal

Alt+Down Arrow drops open the full Chrome menu. If you immediately follow that by B it will open up the Bookmarks submenu which you can then Down Arrow (and/or up arrow once you're after entry number one) to go through them.
I have not tried first letter navigation in that submenu and don't have the time at the moment (nor do I have JAWS handy right now). -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep. ~ Saul Bellow, To Jerusalem and Back

Well, this is a fascinating development, first letter navigation works in the Chrome Bookmarks list whether you have a screen reader active or not, and it works just like when a screen reader is active (without narration, of course).
If I hit Enter once sitting on a Bookmark I want to open it opens in the tab I'm currently in. So if you know you want a page to open in a tab of its own open that tab with CTRL+T first, then follow that by ALT + Down Arrow, B then start with first letter nav. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep. ~ Saul Bellow, To Jerusalem and Back

I agree that this is annoying and not something I want. And Chrome's Bookmark Manager function is not as "multi-select and move en-masse" friendly as that in Firefox or others. I just tried the Chrome Bookmarks manager and it's become what seems to be 100% drag and drop driven. I almost never use bookmarks, per se, as if I start entering a URL or a distinct part of it, and it's bookmarked or I've visited it before, it virtually always shows up in one of the first several items returned by the URL search. I point and click on the one I want but I teach my clients to type something they believe will be "kinda distinctive," arrow down then back up once (so you catch the first item returned, otherwise it seems all screen readers miss is) then if that's not it down arrow a few times to see if what you're looking for is in the returned search results. It's typically before result 5 if it's something you use with relative frequency. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep. ~ Saul Bellow, To Jerusalem and Back

I just tried the alt, f and then B command in chrome and it works for me, pressing the alt and F together brings up the context menu then pressing B selects the bookmarks option. Thanks Mario, this is a handy key combination to know. Paul

Also, remember that all the sites you visit, the most recent ones are on your Chrome home page. This often negates the need for bookmarks.

Very strange why this is inconsistent, but Alt+F does nothing for me and it doesn’t matter if I press and hold Alt and press F which is what Alt+F usually means or if I press Alt and let go and then press F. Actually, Alt+Down Arrow also does nothing. For me it is pressing Alt by itself and letting go which brings up the menu, Jaws will say Customize and control Google Chrome. If I press either up or down arrow at this point I get Settings, Help and Exit as the first three options, if I down arrow more I get to things like New Tab, New Window, New Incognito Window etc. If I press up arrow after Alt I again get Settings, but then if I keep pressing up arrow it wraps around and I get the Paste which is the last option if I were to press down arrow.
As you said, Brian, if I press Alt and let go and then press left arrow it will take me into my list of installed extensions starting at the very right. That one is nice to know since usually I would go there by pressing F6 followed by Tab. Pressing right arrow which I thought may take you to the extensions starting from the left side takes you to Reload this page, if I right arrow again I get View site information button menu secure and right again then goes into the address bar.
This is how it works on this laptop, I’ll try to remember to see if my desktops at work behave the same way.

I am using Windows 10 Professional 64 Bit on all my PC’s and on this laptop here at home I am running the latest Insider version 1809 built, 17763.1, I guess at this point we are only days or at best a week or two away from the start of the official public ro-out of 1809. Whether that makes a difference I don’t know which is why I said I would try how my work desktops behave which all run the latest built of 1803.

Google Chrome Version 69.0.3497.100 for me too. The alt F thing works for me, but even then it’s just not as fluid to get to the bookmarks in Chrome as with Firefox. It may be a simple thing, but one of those things for a heavy bookmarks user like myself where it matters. That said, and the Chrome bookmarks thing aside, does anyone know of a means to synchronize bookmarks between both browsers? Perhaps any third party add-ons to handle bookmarks?
