With Windows 10, there is no way to assign a shutdown sound.

as I understand, Microsoft has disabled the ability to enable such a

sound, and many sighted users have tried rather involved methods but none of the attempts have seemed to work reliably. but, if some smart and savvy dude out there knows how to enable it, please do post how with complete and concise steps.

So how can you tell for sure that your computer has shut down completely if there is no sound like in Windows 7 and earlier? This is yet another reason why I'm in no hurry to upgrade to Windows 10.

There is a bit of a trick to check for windows shut down. Wait a bit and try opening your CD drive. If it opens, you're not totally shut down. If not, shut down has taken place.

Related to Maria's trick is just using a jump drive or SD card.
If you plug in or pull either of the above you will typically get a system sound telling you that it's either connected and ready for use or that it (or some other) USB device has been removed. If you yank a jump drive after doing a shutdown, and after waiting at least a reasonable amount of time for a shutdown to complete, you should be pretty safe in assuming that you are shut down if you don't get an auditory signal related to removing a USB device. I have bent over backwards trying to find a consistent way to trigger a shutdown sound, but have not as yet found it. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill

Another way is to see if the lights on the machine go out. I have a usb hub that has extremely bright lights. I can tell if the computer is off when the lights go out. I know that this won't help everybody but for those of you who have enough sight to see lights, it may be helpful.

Also, my computers fan makes a sound. When I can not feel the air coming from the fan, I know the computer has shut down.

in the meantime, it would be appreciated, I think by most blind and/or

sighted users, to send feedback to Microsoft pleeding that the familiar Windows 7 shutdown sound be reenabled and that any wav file can be assigned as it was possible with earlier versions of Windows, i.e. via the sounds applett of the control panel. there might be a chance MS would consider it if there were compelling reasons such as for blind users who choose to completely shutdown their system and are using a laptop (or desktop) that does not have any means of testing to see if the system is truely shutdown. the more the reasons that are reasonable, the better the chance MS might do it. no?

I did a google as well as a you tube search for creating a startup and shutdown sound and there were numerous solutions. Some of the methods might not be easy for a screen reader user but if you want it maybe have some sighted help.

Sieghard Weitzel wrote up a set of step-by-step instructions for doing what can be done in order to create a shutdown sound. On some computers this is 100% reliable while on others it is anything from erratic (e.g., mine) to doesn't work. But, that being said, it's worth a try:

Also, my slightly simplified method, with an XML file I created that uses one of the standard Windows system ring sounds you've probably never heard as the shutdown sound:

Hello,

I rely on the continuous fan sound to go off. The silent nature of a laptop is the problem. I agree that MS should be asked to add the shut down theme along with the start up theme. I noticed that NVDA has a shutting down sound, maybe JAWS would be the easier and quickest way to help the blind users of screen readers. Peter T

The trick under Windows 10 is that you have to disable the Fast Startup feature in order for it to play. Anyone who fires up the Windows 10 Feedback Hub app and does a search on "Shutdown sound" will find many requests for its return that they can upvote. I could swear I'd actually submitted a piece of feedback on this topic, but it's not turning up in the search for my feedback with that set of search terms. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill

Taking away the shutdown sound in Windows 10 proves once again that MS really does not careabout accessibility, contrary to what some list members believe to the contrary. What possible advantage is there to having no audible means of confirming that your computer has completely shut down? On some laptops, the cooling fan is so weak that it is difficult to impossible to tell whether it is running just by feeling or placing your ear next to the case, so this may not be a reliable substitute for the shutdown sound. Maybe someone who is smarter than me can explain how eliminating the shutdown sound is an "improvement".

One can't explain it. It just seems like Microsoft just doesn't care about accessibility much. If they didn't have their hands in the pockets of so many, they wouldn't bother with it at all I fear.
