Using Microsoft Narrator to download and install JAWS

Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. <kramlinger.keith@...>

Hi,

I have 2 new computers with Windows 7 Pro that do not yet have a screen reader.

I think I’ll need to use Microsoft Narrator to gain Administrative  privileges to download and install JAWS.

Do you think this will work? How can I activate Narrator? Any advice on practical use within Narrator will be much appreciated.

Is there any way to activate Narrator from the Login Screen? I doubt it, but thought I’d ask.

Best,

Keith

I know it works on win 8, 8.1 and 10. I'm not sure that win 7's
narrator is robust enough to manage it (the hardest step is using it
with internet explorer to perform the actual download, everything else
is trivial).

I think the easiest way is to press the windows key+r, type narrator and press enter. I don't know if it can be set to load at the login screen.

Keith,

Not 100% sure if this works in Windows 7 or not, but you can give it a try. Narrator was beefed up in Windows 10, and I know these steps would work on Windows 10:

Press the Windows Key + Enter simultaneously to start Narrator. This works at the login screen in Windows 10.

Hold down Caps Lock and use the left/right arrow keys to move between objects/buttons/controls. This works at the login screen and on web pages.

I was able to use Narrator in this fashion to login, download, and install JAWS on a new Windows 10 installation. However, Narrator was far less sophisticated in Windows 7 so this may not work.

I hope this helps!

I am pretty sure win+enter does _not_ work on win7, IIRC it's win+u
there,, though that may just bring up the accessibility center with
speech enabled. If win+u does not start narrator I know the
accessibility center can do so.

Hi,

You could also use NVDA installed on a USB memory stick. You’d have to know the drive letter of the USB drive in order to start NVDA, but you could press Windows R to bring up the run command, and then try different drive letters, i.e. E:\NVDA. If this doesn’t work, press escape, then Windows R followed by F:\NVDA, etc.

The nice thing about running NVDA from a thumb drive is, unlike Jaws, you don’t need to install video intercept or anything else.

You, of course, will need to have Jaws, or another screen reader  running in order to download and install the portable version of NVDA.

Thanks all.

Maybe I’ll go the NVDA route.

Under Windows 10, it definitely works. I used Narrator to install JAWS by
downloading it with MSIE. I then used JAWS to install Firefox, Chrome and

other applications.

Yes, you are able to download jaws using narrator. It is what I did;

Open ie.

Go to the address bar, pressing alt d, and typing the URL of freedom scientific.

Freedomscientific.com

Press enter

Now you press control f, to search for downloads

Now you press enter.

Now you press again control f, and now search for jaws, then press enter

Again, ppress control f and search again for jaws, but this time you will be pending of listening which jaws are you finding pressing control f. So when you find the version of jaws that you want, press enter.

It is all,

Narrator does a great job at letting you find the JAWS installation download, you can press enter on that, then turn off Narrator, because the JAWS installer begins talking.

Hi,
I wanted to let you know that in win10, to tturn on Narrator, just press windows+enter and Narrator will start. Just press alt+tab to the Narrator window and tab through different catagories of settings and adjust the voice rate, voice you hear, and many more settings. Narrator does perform many tasks like reading a document in notepad, You can navigate your entire computer, you can find files on a flash drive with it, and on and on. Now, in win 7 or below, Press windows+U to bring up ease of access, and press the letter N for Narrator, I think, I cannot remember this for sure, because I have used 8.1 and above for three years. In that Narrator window, there are over 70 keyboard commands to memorize. For example, to read the item you are on, press caps lock+D. You can use up and down arrows like always to go through a list and use first letter navigation.
Take care.
