Jaws and Microsoft Access

Teddy assefa <theo.assefa@...>

Hi ,
Is there any documentation or sample code out there for making MS Access applications 508 compliant and/or readable with JAWS ?

Thanks
-Teddy

Mcginnis, Barbara

I have often wondered myself why there is not more JAWS information on Access. It is like Access just fell by the wayside.

Yes, there is practically no material available for developing apps in Access (or any VBA based).

I'm using common windows controls and appears the properties need to be modified for JAWS. Some examples of issues Im having are:
- a password Textbox field, JAWS echoes the characters typed in and not asterisk
- radio buttons (in an Option Group) when checked, JAWS reads as Not-checked (and vice-versa)
- cannot Tab to the heading of a Tab control

Anyone else gone down this road?

Thanks
-Teddy

Dave...

FS stopped script development for MS-Access several versions ago; I think
around JAWS 7. You might get some help with that version if you can find the
scripts and recompile them for the current version. Another user on this
list has been struggling with MS-Access for years; perhaps he'll chime in.

Yes, there is practically no material available for developing apps
in Access (or any VBA based).

I'm using common windows controls and appears the properties need to
be modified for JAWS. Some examples of issues Im having are:
- a password Textbox field, JAWS echoes the characters typed in and
not asterisk
- radio buttons (in an Option Group) when checked, JAWS reads as
Not-checked (and vice-versa)
- cannot Tab to the heading of a Tab control

Anyone else gone down this road?

Thanks

Yes, there is practically no material available for developing apps
in Access (or any VBA based).

I'm using common windows controls and appears the properties need to
be modified for JAWS. Some examples of issues Im having are:
- a password Textbox field, JAWS echoes the characters typed in and
not asterisk
- radio buttons (in an Option Group) when checked, JAWS reads as
Not-checked (and vice-versa)
- cannot Tab to the heading of a Tab control

Anyone else gone down this road?

Thanks

Hi again, Barbara. Tom Bissett found his real name. It's Jim Snowbarger. The
scripts he wrote for SoundForge, which is a recording/editing program for
sound files is an application which works with JAWS. The scripts which Jim
wrote for SoundForge are JAWS scripts.

Scripting Microsoft Access and making it accessible with JAWS really ought
to be a primary objective - if not for Freedom Scientific (as it should be)
then by we users. That it is essentially totally inaccessible is a *major*
shortcoming and limiting factor. Oddly, while the program itself is
inaccessible, BookShare has dozens of totally accessible books all about MS
Access. Search "Microsoft access" there and you will be amazed. The loss
to the blind in terms of independence, equality and employment opportunities
because of MS Access not being accessible is huge.

It was problematic in JAWS 11-12, when I was running XP. Field contents could be neither read nor edited. I'm not a heavy user, but presently have no trouble with it at either home or office.

Okay you old timers. Question: What was the name of the individual
that wrote so many scripts for JAWS? I am thinking his name had
something to do with snow. Does anyone remember?

Thanks Dave, hopefully that user will chime in. Any ideas on how I can
get a hold of those scripts for older JAWS versions.

Thanks

years; perhaps he'll chime in.

Thanks

Hi ,
Is there any documentation or sample code out there for making MS
Access applications 508 compliant and/or readable with JAWS ?

Thanks

Mcginnis, Barbara

That is really good Ted. I might try working with it some. Would love to be able to use it with JAWS.

It was problematic in JAWS 11-12, when I was running XP. Field contents could be neither read nor edited. I'm not a heavy user, but presently have no trouble with it at either home or office.

JAWS as far as I know has never really supported Access. The way you can tell is that Henter Joyce which is the company that developed JAWS as well as Freedom Scientific, which is a merge of three companies, have never released any training material for Access nor conducted a webinar.

yep, "the snowman". he also made some other scripts for programs that he used and made them available for a price for others to use.
