Volume for YouTube with IE11

Adrian Spratt

The other day I posted a query after losing lost all sound on YouTube when using IE11 as my browser. I now have the solution, though it isn't a good one.

Several people offered suggestions, but nothing worked. Keep in mind that I could get sound on other websites with IE11, and I could also get sound on YouTube with Firefox. In my query, I noted that JAWS showed a volume panel for YouTube that it didn't detect when IE11 was the browser.

I've now confirmed that the solution is to raise the volume on the YouTube page when using IE11. Since this setting is not accessible, it required asking someone with sight.

Hi, the volume slider on the YouTube player can be accessed with IE11 by turning off the virtual cursor then tabbing or in my case shift tabbing until you reach the player controls. When you have tabbed to the player controls tab to the volume slider and the slider will work with the arrow keys as long as you have the virtual cursor turned off. This method also works with the forward and back slider.

If you have Windows 7 and possibly higher, you can access the YouTube volume as follows.
Go to system tray and find speaker icon and press enter on volume mixer.
Then tab to volume for YouTube and raise or lower with up or down arrows.

Thanks, Maria, but not on my Win7 system. In that dialog there is an IE volume control, but not one specifically for YouTube. It might show up if I have YouTube running on Firefox, but that wouldn't solve my IE issue.

Thanks, Tom, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I've just tabbed through a n entire YouTube page with virtual cursor turned off and found everything plus the kitchen sink, but no player controls. My speakers (MM-1s) don't use a soundcard, and I wonder if that's the difference. But JAWS does detect the player controls when I'm running Firefox.

Also, when you check the system volume control, do you know if IE is active
when you look at the "volume mixer"? If it is not, it would not show up on
the " volume mixer" list. If it is, I am at a loss to help further along
this line of approach.

Otherwise, could the "volume on the YouTube page" be accessed with the Touch
Cursor?

Update. I lost YouTube sound again, and once again tried Tom and Mario's method. This time I was able to reach the mute/unmute, play and volume controls. So to repeat their instructions, open a YouTube page, turn off the virtual cursor by pressing control-z, then tab, or in this case, shift-tab. I think I had to shift-tab just twice. This is in IE11 on a Win7, 64-bit machine.

I could get sound on other websites with IE11, and I could also get sound on
YouTube with Firefox. In my query, I noted that JAWS showed a volume panel
for YouTube that it didn't detect when IE11 was the browser.

I've now confirmed that the solution is to raise the volume on the
YouTube page when using IE11. Since this setting is not accessible, it
required asking someone with sight.

Virtual cursor on and off command is JAWS key-z, not Control-z. Control-z is
the undo command.

Update. I lost YouTube sound again, and once again tried Tom and Mario's
method. This time I was able to reach the mute/unmute, play and volume
controls. So to repeat their instructions, open a YouTube page, turn off the
virtual cursor by pressing control-z, then tab, or in this case, shift-tab.
I think I had to shift-tab just twice. This is in IE11 on a Win7, 64-bit
machine.

Thanks to both of you.

That's what I did, Mario. For some reason, no cigar on my system.

Adrian, turn off your virtual cursor with a inserrt+z.
then tab a couple of times so that the flash interface has focus and use
up/Down Arrow to raise/lower the volume.

Thanks, Maria, but not on my Win7 system. In that dialog there is an IE
volume control, but not one specifically for YouTube. It might show up if I
have YouTube running on Firefox, but that wouldn't solve my IE issue.

If you have Windows 7 and possibly higher, you can access the YouTube
volume as follows.
Go to system tray and find speaker icon and press enter on volume mixer.
Then tab to volume for YouTube and raise or lower with up or down arrows.
