When on the net.
Carolyn Arnold <4carolyna@...>
Does anyone know what commands to use when attempting to go directly to the content of something on the web? I have experimented with everything that I can imagine with the help of JAWS Help. If anyone can tell me, thanks you very much in advance.

Hi, Carolyn. We don't have enough information from you as to what type of content you are trying to directly navigate to.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
With that said, If you are looking for some sort of text on a webpage, you can use Control plus the letter F when not in a form field, and it will bring up a search box where you can enter text you're looking for. Bill White billwhite92701@dslextreme.com

There is no "skip to content" JAWS command that works universally across web pages. Fortunately, more and more web developers mark the start of the main content with either heading level 1 or ARIA regions. If that doesn't work on pages you need to access, try pressing the letter n, which skips past blocks of links. This method, however, won't always work either. In short, quick navigation to the main content is very much page-specific.

This is typically a link that takes you to the start of content, so you press enter on it. I don't like using such links because they confuse me when I want to go back. You would expect the link to take you to another place on the same page, but if you try to go back a page with alt-left arrow, you stay on the same page. It takes a second press of alt-left arrow to go back an actual page, which is one more nagging point I don't need to keep in my head. Web designers who create such "Skip to content" links are already accessibility-savvy, so I find the h for heading or n for skip links works fine in those cases.

All true. The corollary is that when you find you're using a website a lot, such as Amazon or your local newspaper, try to remember which quick navigation keys work well on it. For example, with Amazon, I find searching for text with control-JAWS key-f gets me the fastest to the content I want, such as "product details" or, for reviews, the word "helpful." On another website, pressing 4 for heading level 4 takes me through the content I need, while yet another website is best navigated with 3 for heading level 3.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The most time is consumed with unfamiliar websites. Here, I start with 1 for heading level 1, then n. If those don't work, it's time to experiment.

That find command is a good one. If you ever want to go stark raving nuts, visit www.arrl.org. It'll tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the organization in particular, or ham radio in general, but it'll wear you out trying to get to a particular link, even if you searched on that link.

Hi Carolyn:
I often use JAWSkey plus f7 to get the list of links on a web page. Also when I find something that I think I want to return to frequently, I put a shortcut on my desktop. My desktop has nearly 80 different shortcuts. From my desktop I can press one or two letters and go directly to the website.
